You need three things to be safe.
1) A firewall. Windows XP has its own firewall. If you don't have XP, I don't know if you can get a free firewall anymore. Sygate was free, but someone bought it. Norton I think.
2) Spybot is still free... and it is the best anti-hacker program on the Internet. It won't let anyone into your computer... as long as you don't forget to get the last updates every month.
3) As well as the two above, your anti-virus is by far the most important one. The two above try to prevent the viruses getting in. But if they fail... your anti-virus is there to catch it. Besides... the two above do not prevent viruses coming through your emails.
I recommend Sophos or Norton.

I think you mean Zone Alarm which is a firewall application that you can install in your computer. I suggest you visit http://www.zonelabs.com to download the application. There is a free version and I would have given you the link but I can't copy and paste yet because my rating didn't reach 500.
