LA Galaxy, a soccer team in Los Angles, announce David Beckham signed for them!
The former England captain has agreed a five-year, £128 MILLION Pound deal to move to Major League Soccer in the US!
Beckham has said that he is looking forward to "the challenge" of building the team!
Let's hope that he still has the skill to "bend the ball" like he did at Manchester United and Barcelona!
If he can, and show the team how to do it, then the USA will DEINATELY be a force to reckon with in the World Cup!

David Beckham is an okay player, he does have a deadly cross on the ball and works hard but i think he's very overhyped.
And he was at Real Madrid, not Barcelona! And i'm sure he didn't sign a new contract because he didn't like all the bench-warming he was doing.
But no doubt he will sell lots of shirts and hopefully raise his new teams profile..:)

OOOOoooppppss
Yep...... my mistake, he was at Real Madrid!!
(for our American Cousins it is pronounced Ree Yal Madrid)!
He WAS brilliant!
There is not doubt about it!
When he was Man Utd, and England, the things that he could do to a ball was MAJIC!!
OK, so now he is 34, and MOST players at that age are starting to "Loose it"I once read somewhere that Real Madrid Football Shirt sales had reached £34 MILLION Pounds!
Call me a cynic if you like, but that sounds to me like very good marketing!

Beckham will always be popular, but as my friend pointed out last night, he doesn't seem to have much of a personality! At least not in interviews anyways. Though he and Vic are great friends with Tom Cruise and Katie which will no doubt help their profile in the States.
I heard his son Brooklyn is supposed to be a decent footballer so watch this space..:)

I think that it is great that David is coming to america. It will be awesome to see how he can change american soccer, to a REAL SPORT that we might find enjoyable to watch. Go David!!

KATYZZZ
There is an emorous amount of greed in the world!!
Is he worth the money?????
Some of the transfer fees that the clubs are paying now are ASTRONOMICAL
I remember when Nottingham Forest paid ONE MILLION POUNDS for Trevor Francis, and then, on top of that another Million Pounds for their new stadium
At the time we all thought it was crazy money
Now..........
CHELSEA paid 30 MILLION POUNDS to bring Andrei Shevchenko from Italy to London!!!

David Beckham is only one of a long list of over the hill football players going to the US to help bolster the sport in the States. The first one, of course, was the great Pelé who went to the Cosmos. The list is long and I can't remember all the names. First of all, I think that most Americans view soccer as a sissy's game (as compared to American football). I have to admit that I, too, belonged to that club. But living in Portugal where soccer is the only game in town changed my opinion. I began to learn about the game from the bottom up and what I discovered is that football/soccer is perhaps the most strenuous sport that any individual can engage in. They must be a marathon runner, a sprint runner, an obstacle runner and at the same time controlling a ball with their feet...either dribbling or passing. In addition, 8 of the 11 starters are forced to play 90 minutes carrying out these feats. There are no timeouts to sit down and catch your breath. This only occurs when an injury occurs, a free kick, or a penalty. The rest of the time is running from end to end 110 meters. I have been writing a serious of articles on this trying to gather more interest by Americans in soccer but so far my articles have fallen on blind eyes.
My point being, that Beckham is going to the States for a long paid vacation. I am sure that it is because his Spice girl wife Victoria does not like Spain and wants to make to be more in the spotlight of Hollywood or wants to be where the action is. We'll never know.

Hi
EXCELLENT comment and a thoroughly desevered (+) to you for it!!!
You are right about the endless list of players going to the States to try and get the "Yanks" interested in football!!
(A beef here against the US and the "World Series" of Baseball!!! How can it be a World Series, when only you play it?? )
You are probably correct about the fact why it is not such a popular sport in US as the rest of the world!!!
But.........
The rest of the world cannot be wrong!!!!
Victoria Beckham probably wants to rub shoulders with the Film Star crowd!!
But.... "Becks" still has a lot to give, and I think, if they let him, he can teach some of you guys the finer arts of football!

I am looking forward to when the USA can actually make it to the World Cup and also COMPETE in it!
I thought they would actually do better than what they did in Germany, because they now have a few players playing in Europe!
However, you are actually very correct when they will get past the first round of the World Cup, this will make EXCELLENT coverage in the US TV Stations!!
The next step is for them to host the World Cup!
WOW!!!!
That would be something!!!!!

This move indicates to me that David Beckham has accepted that he will not be returning to the England team. It is a great move for his bank balance, not so much for his career as Major League Soccer is not a high enough standard league for him.

Yes, unfortunately he is still missed in the Enland Team!! In my opinion anyway!
Remember the Free Kicks he used to take!!
There is only one other player who can take Free Kicks like Beckham..... Ronaldinho!
"Becks" has been quoted as saying that he has now played for two of the biggest clubs in the world, and at the highest level for 15 years.
So not bad really!

Hi Gabs
Hope you are keeping well?
He does get a round doesnt he!!
Actually, the US of A has been to the World Cup, they did not do too badly, and it was this year, in Germany!
If they continue to learn how to play, they will soon not be the "Micky Mouse Walk Overs" that many contries think they are now!
I would say the problem they will have as a National Football Team, is the fact that the Country is SO BIG!!!
How is the National Football Manager going to be able to watch all of his potential players!!
This is of course assuming that "Becks" does his job, and that "Soccer" starts to become part of the "American Way Of Lif" !!!

i think its a good move by the club concerned.they definitely do hve the right man for the job.personally i think beckham has got a lot to offer as a footballer as well.with england showing no intentions of availing his services,it is a good opportunity for him to show that he still is a force to be reackoned with.
but i dont know the quality of football in US but just hope that its not too far below par, else it would be an insult for a player like beckham.

The problem with your statement is the fact that as yet, unfortunately, the USA is not on the World Map for playing football!!
The majority of the FIFA Countries do not recognise the fact that the player will be playing "competitive" football, and thus, the players will NOT be eligible for playing for their country!
Beckham is now just past his "prime" and although still an EXCELLENT player, he is getting close to "hanging up his boots" !!
If you have been at the top of the sport, as he has, having played for the TWO TOP TEAMS in football, Real Madrid and Manchester United, it is difficult to go and play for a "lesser club" and still be considered as "playing football" !!!
He has obviously done it for the money! But......... like I said before, he is still good enough to show the youngsters in the USA how to control a football, and how to "bend it"
(remember the film "Bend it like Beckham" !!!)
I remember that Pele, the "Super star" from South America went to the USA for a while, and this act alone started to put football "on the map" in the US of A

I'd do it for $250 million dollars too! Wow is that a lot of money to kick start the team. He should fit in over in LA though, since he and his wife seem to already know quite a few people in Hollywood. They were at the TomKat wedding

Yea Beckham was my idol, i don't know what happend to him maybe celebrity went to his head. Usa make a major risc by bringing Beckamp or did not i probably hope that some how Beckamp will rise again. I think Usa is more intrested of Beckamp publicity money he brings i heard that beckamp bringed 150 milions dolars to REal Madrid only in publicity.

The days of Beckham is already over. Actually I can rather say a transfer to LA Galaxy makes him a celebrity rather than a football player. He's not playing football like what he used to when he's in Manchester United. But what I like of Beckham is he got the skills for curving free kicks and accurate corner kicks. That's what make me amazed.

David Beckham is a great athlete. No doubt about it. But the amount he is being paid comes to 250 Million Dollars US. I dont believe anybody is worth that kind of money. What can he possibly do with all of that money. I just hope he continues to play well, and achieve the ultimate dreams.
