We try to avoid them as much as possible. I just dont like the way they have forced the Mom & Pop stores to close down. I don't think their products are as good even if they are brand name. They just dont seem to last if they work to start with. I have not been to walmart in a few months.

There brand name products are returnable if there is a problem. There are other stores that have return policys too. I've had to return products to other store as well.

I absolutely hate Wal-Mart and do not shop there. The only time I might be forced to shop at Wal-Mart is when we go camping. The city we camp in has only a Pick N Save (grocery) and Wal-Mart, so if I forget something I usually have to go to Wal-Mart because Pick N Save isn't 24 hours.

My finances force me to have to shop at Walmart. I wish that other shops had the opportunity to offer the bargains that they do. It is unfortunate that they are able to get their products from vendors for less than the smaller stores. It should be the same prices across the board.

They are able to get the products from the vendors at lower prices because of the volumn they order. The little stores don't have a high selling nitch that Walmart has. They don't have a need to order in big quantities like the bigger stores.

When I quit there I will avoid it like it's the plague. I hate the company. But honestly I rarely shopped there before I started working there. We shopped for groceries elsewhere. And clothes too. Now it's a matter of convience for me and plus that small little discount they give us. I didn't like it before I started there because it was just too busy in there. Now it'll be for that reason and the things I've learned about the company. A good documentry to watch is : Wal-mart the High Cost of Low Prices.

Sara,
You are posing a wonderful discussion and I am more than happy to answer honestly.
I have tried to stop shopping at Walmart but have not been successful for several reasons.
1. I HATE the fact that they have the replacement cashier "quick and easy" checkouts and REFUSE to use them. Even if I only have a few items, I will stand in a long line before I would do that. I have discussed this with cashiers and they are hurt/afraid/resentful of the quick checkouts
2. There are some things that I can only get at Walmart such as their Equate brand nose spray and other personal care items that are so very much cheaper; and on a fixed income it hurts my purse too much not to go there
3. I have tossed and turned over this decision for quite some time; and although I would love to "stand up" for the maltreatment of the employees; if we were all to boycott Walmart - where would the employees be working? After all, Walmart employs more people than any other company in the United States. Can you imagine all of these people without jobs?
This is a very disturbing thing for me and it's something that I hope that Walmart can rectify. I do hope that the class action suit will bring about change in the corporation.
Thank you for posting this discussion `Donna

I don't want to avoid Wal-Mart. First thing we can gt everything under one roof. I just don't like to go every time to different store for different item. Second, things are relatively cheap in Wal-Mart than other store.

I don't shop there. It's not a hardship at all, since I buy very few first-hand goods to begin with, and have half a dozen places to buy food within a mile of my house (natural foods store, salvage grocery, farmer's market, two supermarkets and a Big Lots.)

I am pissed off at Walmart.. First they get rid of layaway, not that I used it very often... And now they got rid of the fabric department.. I live in a small town and there isnt any fabric stores around here.. I still shop there.. but I am still pissed at them...

I'm not a big fan of Wal-Mart and hardly ever shop there. It is way too crowded there all the time, and I hate having to wander around huge stores like that to find everything I'm looking for. Plus, I have read articles on Wal-Mart's business practices and it turns me off from wanting to give them my business.

I despise Walmart. The quality of many of their items is cheap and the lines are absolutely terrible. The place ALWAYS has long lines, they never have enough registers open! I have read many things (from my son's union) about how poorly Walmart treats its employeees. So no, I do not shop there. I'm a Target girl all the way!

I don't exactly avoid Wal-Mart. It's just that there aren't any close by to go to so I end up not shopping there. I go to Target a lot though.

I have heard all the good and bad things about Wal Mart. But the bottom line is price. When I do not have a huge budget for spending, and I need to stretch my dollars, and Wal Mart has the lowest prices, that is where I will go. Sometimes you want to do things differently but your bidget will only allow you to do things a certain way.

I agree with you to an extent, Gemini - but I also believe that many people who say. "I *have* to shop at Wal-Mart" are incorrect. While it certainly doesn't apply to everyone, I believe there are far more people who think this than people to whom it truly applies.
And, for me, there's a balance between price and ethics. My bottom line is often price, but getting the lowest price at the cost of feeling uncomfortable with my purchase isn't worth it to me. I save in other ways - making bread and all our baked goods including toaster waffles and pancakes, cooking from scratch, hang drying clothes, etc. - and those choices allow me a little more freedom in where I "vote with my dollar."
Besides, after keeping a price book, I found Wal-Mart prices weren't the lowest on a number of things anyway! :)

What is your reasoning behind avoiding Walmart?
I don't avoid Walmart. I shop there for about half of my stuff (excluding groceries). I don't think they are a bad company. No, I have never worked there. But my best friend does and has never had any problems. They don't discriminate against him just because he's gay. He loves his job and has been working there for 8 years. His pay is alright, too and always has been comparable to any other retail store in the area we grew up in. He is a manager now and makes quite decent money.
I do still shop at other stores because I think competition is key. I absolutely hate shopping in the local Kmart because the people that work there are so rude most of the time. It might have something to do with the fact that they are paid less than Walmart and hate their jobs? But we do still shop there because we don't want them to go out of business and they do have some baby things that my son likes that are cheaper than Walmart, or that Walmart doesn't carry.
I do most of my shopping on base, though. At least 80% of my grocery shopping is done at the commisary. Roughly 30% of any other shopping I do is at the BX as well. But Walmart is a good alternative if I need or want something that they don't carry at the BX or the commisary.

I shop at Wal-Mart simply for the convience of being able to buy everything at one store. If I had other options, I would try those. Wal-Mart is always so busy that I try to go real late at night when my kids are sleeping so I can get done faster.
