What was the point of Joseph in the birth of Christ?

It seems to me that there is no reason for Joseph to be in the story of the birth of Christ. Was he more than just a divine step father?

Well Jesus need a mother and father so I suppose Joseph was convienient and also it's because he was related to David that they go to Bethlehem
