Bus drivers and cell phones

The other day I was driving home in the early afternoon and coming from the opposited direction was a school bus driver. I just happened to notice that he was talking on his cell phone and appeared to be laughing.
I tried to catch the name of the school on the side of the bus, but couldn't. I was just amazed at this. I would think that a school bus driver would have enough distractions as it is without talking on a cell phone. I would also think that there would be rules and perhaps laws against such things?
If my children had been on that bus that driver would have an ear full from me. What do you think? Do your children ride the bus? How would you feel if you find out the bus driver was on the cell phone while driving your kids to school?

I totally agree with you, this does not sound like the safest thing that a bus drive could be doing. I would thinkg with a bunch of kids talking on the bus the last thing that you would want is to talk to someone else while you were driving.
You would think that the school would have some sort of policy against that.... but even if they do have a policy it would be very hard to enforce as the buses are all out running around where there is very little people who actually pay attention to what the bus driver is doing. They need people like you to bring it to their attention that these kind of things are happening. Just another thing where you need to police people... tell them that you have myLot experience and they will know you are trust worthy one.
Personally if I saw a bus driver on the phone while my child was on that bus, I would go staight to the school board. I don't think that talking to the bus driver would do any good. They probably don't care what some parents think, but they may care what the people who write their checks think.

You're right, my MyLot experience really does speak to my character! I'm thinking that if I ever go back to work that I will definately use this on my resume!
I think most people listen to the person who signs their check then others who don't really effect their job.

I think it is smart for them to have one on the bus for emergencies. I o not think they should be permittd to talk on them, if it is not. They need to know what is going on, on the bus, and outside the bus. Good way to end up getting someone hurt

You are thinking about your children.Nothing wrong. But how come you 've forgotten about yourself? The driver 's chances of running the bus over you is also there.
I've blocked another vehicle, carrying a driver who was deeply immersed in a cell phone conversation. I forced him to stop. Not knowing what made me block his way.stopped and rushed towards me menacingly warning and waving his hand. I allowed to come close and when he was close to me,I snatched his phone and handed it to the traffic cop standing there all along and watching the fun. It is a lesson to the non-nonchalant police and the rule flouter.

Hi everyone. I'm a school bus driver. And yes I have to agree talking on a cell phone while driving the school bus is not good. Some states, towns and counties give fines and tickets. It's even worse when you have kids on the bus. Thats why they make hands free phone.

I'm glad that a bus driver took the time to respond to this discussion! Do you think that the bus driver should be reported? Would you report one of your fellow co-workers who talked to the cell phones?

This is very shocking and disturbing as this person should not be allowed to drive or drive a school bus full of children. I would report them to the school and school district as he or she is endangering the lives of our children. They should not allow the drivers to carry their cell phones with them while driving. This would upset me very much if I had a child and they were on a bus where the driver was talking on the cell phone. This person should be fired.

I am of the opinion that cell phones should not be used by any one while driving not just bus drivers. And yes that is a major atrocity. When I had my on business I used my mobile phone a lot. But every time it rang while I was driving I answered it and asked the person to hold while I tried to find a safe place to pull over. And this was way before cell phones became the in thing and every one had to have one.

I would be livid had it been my daughters bus driver. I just called her in and asked if her driver ever talked on the phone while driving them, and she said , no. I am pretty sure in most school districts this would not be allowed. I don't talk when I am driving and I certainly would not allow my child to ride a bus where it was allowed. When you have so many children in your care, you should be extra cautious at everything you do. No way should you be on the phone. I think I would have turned around and followed that bus and got the bus number and the school. I am just like that though. The other day a big semi truck pulled right out in front of me, and he saw me. I had my daughter in the car, and had to go off the road to keep from hitting him. I followed him until I had his company on the phone, and reported him. Don't mess with the wellfare of my kids! I won't back down on that...

i knw that is a severe problem especiallly if u are in a developing country like india whne any improvement is going on people will start referring to those things as culprits and try to run away from the crime scene the best way to tackle this problem is to educate people abt this

In my country, there are rules stating that drivers are not allowed to talk on the phone while driving. I agree with you totally as this will distract the concentration of the driver and eventually affect the safety of the passengers and other vehicles as well. All drivers should stop at certain places if they really need to listen to the phone.

Well, I have seen drivers who drive the Transit buses also where I live on their Cell phone and driving at the same time as well. Personally, I think they should make a Ruling about driving and talking on a Cell phone if you are in a position where you are driving many people around unless you are having to get directions to where you are going. Otherwise you are endangering the lives of many people, and then could be risking your life and theirs when something out of the ordinary chooses to happen.

I would be furious and still calling the Transportation Department to ensure that they address their entire staff! Of course, I probably also would have turned around had I not been pressed for time to find out what the bus number was to report that driver also.
I agree with you. They have enough distractions to be talking on a cell while driving!!! Not to mention, that big wheel they use to navigate actually does require two hands to keep proper control. Maybe that is what is happening with the more frequent bus accidents that seem to be appearing a lot on the news!!!

I was just talking to my sister about how I wish that I could have gotten the school and the bus number! I would have reported him too. Especially as a mother I feel like it's my job to help protect other mother's children, just as I would want them to do for me.
I'm pretty sure I know the school district that the bus was from, so I'm going to write a letter to the school superintendent, the local newspaper and perhaps even law enforcement. I might be going overboard, but I feel like this is something that needs to be addressed.

The odd part is though, that buses (our city ones) have always had 2 way radios in them so they could be in contact with the base. They use them sparingly but they do still use them and listen to them, etc. It's not quite the same but still, another thing that makes you wonder how safe they really are.
I agree that there should be absolutely NO cells allowed in use on the bus unless it's pulled over. They too should have a 2 way radio in case of an emergency I'm sure.
I would turn the person in and make a very loud complaint, perhaps even contacting the local newspaper and news shows regarding it. It is a huge controversy right now anyways and the tv stations would probably jump on it.

I agree, the radios are there to inform bus drivers of information that they need. They can also be used to report any problems or other things. There's no reason a bus driver would need a phone.

The buses here still use those 2 way radios. I have actually heard base communicating with them, many times when I had to call to find out if the bus was ever going to come.
I guess I am lucky, I haven't seen a bus driver on a cell phone. I just see cops driving along with a phone glued to their ear while weaving in and out of traffic.
But if I saw a bus driver talking on the phone, I would have tried to get the bus number on the side of the bus, then call that counties school district to report the driver.
Your right, tv stations would jump on that in a heart beat, with all the cases of bus accidents. I know here, there on the news more than the war in Iraq.

That's crazy..It's too bad you didn't catch the number of the bus, the driver should have been fired immediately. School buses are unsafe enough in my mind ithout the driver being careless on the job. I think cell phones in cars should be banned or at the very least made to be hands free..it's not as if we don't have the technology to do it.

I would be seriously p*ssed if I found out my sons bus driver was yaking on the phone while driving the bus. It's not something I have to worry about right now, since my son goes to private school and I drive him and pick him up (they don't even offer bus service).
This does remind me of a time when I didn't have a car and was taking public transportation to work, the driver was busily playing a key chain poker or slots game, not just while sitting at lights, but while actually driving the bus. This greatly affected her ability to drive the bus, I honestly began to wonder if I was even going to make it to work that day.
Things that distract drivers at all are not a good thing, but really, you couldn't wait until you got home to play your slots game? What is that all about?

I think that's bull. He really should not be on his cell phone during school bus operational times. Cell phones are a huge distraction and trying to talk on the cell phone and put up with noisy kids..as well as pay attention to the road only means disaster.
