Hypothetical situation. You are shopping. At the cashier desk, you are given too much change. The bill has come to $20.45 and you give the cashier $21.00. You count it quickly when given to you and realize it's $6 too much because she put in a 7 instead of a 1. She is busy chatting with the neighbor cashier so you know she isn't paying attention. Do you point out the mistake or keep the change?
Most people will immediately point out a mistake if it means the store is getting too much money. How many would do the opposite.

I can honestly say I've taken the honest route in either direction, I pay more or I pay less. I did actually have a girl give me a hard time and argue with me that she did NOT give me too much change back. I looked at her and went "Fine, I'm glad you're perfect because it made me $10 richer" and walked away. I was so disgusted with her attitude that I hoped I was one of many she messed up on and had a drawer that was super short! LOL Ok, so I have a bit of a mean streak even if I am honest! lol

I would definitely let the cashier know that she had made a mistake, and that it was probably caused by not paying attention to her job. I've had many friends and relatives who worked in retail positions, and some of them have had to make up any shortage in their register at the end of the day.

I had shortages in my cash drawer at times when I was a cashier. It happens to everyone. I was pretty good at my job and well liked by my bosses. (Is my nose brown). It was the policy where I was working that I never had to make up the shortages from my own pocket, but I think I was just lucky.

If she was rude or talking to someone else while ringing me up, I would keep it. Other then that I would give it back.

I would point it out. If I didn't I would keep waiting on retribution, you know the saying "what goes around comes around" and that is not just a saying to me I have seen it happen.

I would try to point it out, but if they argued (as I have had them do), I would keep it.
This situation actually happened to me. I went to bank to deposit $ 1200.oo for my company. I was really broke at the time. Drive thru teller took money and deposit slip, did her thing, sent back out envelope with deposit slip AND the $ 1200.00 ! ! !!! Without looking in the envelope, I drove off. At the light right down the road, I noticed the en. really full and looked in. Man oh man, could I have really used that $ 1200. I had to pull over and think about it. But I couldn't do that to the teller. She may have been having an off day, but that should not cost her her job and $ 1200. I took it back. Boy was she releived. Did not even know that she had done it. But she was sure happy I was honest.
