Hey fellow gardeners, what seeds are you starting and how early do you start them. I have found that I am usually to eager and end up with spindly plants that just don't do well. What I am looking for is your sucess stories and helpful hints on time lines, growing conditions, fertilizers etc....

The cheapest and easiest way to start from seed is winter sowing. Go to www.gardenweb.com and search winter sowing, it has a great faq section that will answer any questions you may have.

I live in the South of the US and I have found my plants do the same thing if I sow the seeds in winter or early spring. I get much healthier plants when I swo them in the July. It is probably my location though.

Not sure where in the world you are living, but most seeds are best grown mid winter, early spring so they can grow to peak during summer, I have plenty of seeds , but the ground where I am is to sandy. so have to grow everything in pots, i use a variety of different fertilisers, osmocote is a good slow feeder for most plants and blood and bone helps them out as well. Start a compost out the back with your food scraps and any plants that dont survive as this does wonders for your plants to.gardening is a live and learn process, which makes it all the more fun, hope you have fun, happy planting.

Depends on the seeds. I usually start them according to their needs. If they need stratification I start them now in the winter in little greenhouses I make from soda bottles. If they're tender or annuals I wait for a couple of week until it's closer to spring. Some seeds I'll just direct sow.
