Linux is very satisfactory as an operating system, I have used Ubuntu, Slax, and Puppy Linux, and have liked them (of course Ubuntu is the best system of these three, the other two are more for the enthusiast). However, do check some essentials-i.e Do you absolutely NEED Microsoft Office or will OpenOffice do. This is important because even though Open Office can read all of Microsoft Office documents, MS Office makes a few errors while reading OpenOffice files especially Impress (the presentation software). Of course there is the openoffice USB suite (if you have an USB stick) to take care of that problem.
Also check out whether your your ISP supports Linux. Sify has a poor Linux support (And I hope they get sued for that).
Also, if you are a serious gamer looking into the latest high end games Windows is better. However, if you are just interested in games as time pass, there are plenty of good Linux games to choose from.
I can only tell you to dual boot Linux into your Windows system if you are unsure. As you get more comfortable, you may feel like ditching Windows. And if you do not have a Windows system, try OpenSuSe or Ubuntu, you may not go back to Windows.

I think more people will go to Linux because of Vista's anti-piracy invasion, but whether they'll stay there is another matter. Most, I think, will revert back to XP and while it might not take much of a bite out of MS's bottom line to start with, its overtime will have a fairly big effect.

Yeah I am using opensuse linux as my primary operating system. Its very beautiful, user friendly, comes with a lot of useful softwares and very secure. One of the strongest point of linux over windows is that it is free. Another one is that it is highly secure and free from viruses. I browse internet through my Linux system and my system is not yet affected by any viruses and that too without using any anti-virus. For the desktop you got a wide choices. You can select the type of desktop which meets your needs. I personally prefer KDE and to tell you it is one of the most configurable desktop you can get. Let me tell you what i feel about Vista. From its feature description it is just a copy of Linux and Mac OS. Many of the features they have implemented is already available in KDE. Even the desktop 3D and other effects are already a part of all linux distros for nearly 6-7 months.
