How do you handle bouts of anger from your spouse?

My husband gets very angry very quickly. It isnt all the time, but when it happens it happens in a flash. I find that most of the time when it happens it is because of my dog or my son. He flys right off the handle and immediately begins yelling and spanking (both the boy and the dog) I don't feel that this resolves anything especially when it was because they were simply being too loud. It only reinforces the same kind of behaviour in them. In fact my dog has now started nippping at people and I feel like it is because my husband hits her. Anyone have any advice?
