If I were to download a artist off the net it's a crime but if there were new bands wanting to be herd they would wan't the world to know, and wan't them to download there music.
Now if a band traveled through my city I pay the $50 too see them and buy a tee shirt or a hat, poster or whatever they sell to promote themselves. so why is it they wan't publicity and fame but when they reach the top it's all about the money?
They started off like you and me!

I've never understood the misguided logic involved either, really. The internet has proven invaluable to a lot of artists. Personally, there are a lot of groups I would never have heard of at all had it not been for the net and P2P downloading. Sweatshop Union, Nightwish, Viv Savage, DJ Quicksilver, Daz Sampson, Lindbergh Palace, DJ Tiesto, among many others. These are all artists that I absolutely love, and discovered through P2P downloading. Because I became a fan, I spend money supporting them NOW by buying their material. If they come through, I would spend the money for their show in a heartbeat.
Thankfully, a lot of the small time artists do recognize the value of this type of publicity. And as you said, most once they reach the point of fame, selfishness takes over and they want every penny, including the ones gained by not having their material on P2P networks.
And that's all it is, greed. I lost a ton of respect for a few of my favorite artists (Eminem, for example) when they joined the fight on file sharing, simple because I don't respect artists who are in it only for the cash instead of the love of music and being heard.
