Is anyone else amazed at the David Beckham deal with the LA team in the US?

David Beckham - $500million in 5 years
United States

I was totally amazed, considering how little Americans really pay attention to soccer, aka football in all other countries, and to see a payroll like that for a game that has yet to take off and a player who is probably in his last years of glory floored me!

The deal sounds crazy, but the team itself is only paying him 9 million dollars per year. The rest of it is being paid for certain endorsements, and is parlayed into the payroll. The deal is being done both because the owner of the Galaxy wants more American soccer fans, and because he owns two other MLS franchises, and if Beckham's presence causes the value of all of his franchises to significantly increase, he will sell one, two, or all three of them for a massive profit.

I was amazed also. Obviously they're hoping, the couple (he and the Posh) will make a good PR for soccer in America. I like Beckham, and I wish him luck but I'm not sure, is he worth SO much. Today I read, there are some problems with him leaving Real Madrid. Let's see, how they will work it out. I watched how American team was playing in World Cup this summer, and they were good, a lot better than I expected.

Soccer is so "new" to the American's and has never really taken off well. I think they're hoping this great PR stunt will make it a huge sport. Not sure if it will work or not but I have to say I myself enjoy watching it.

Im not at all suprised, David Beckham is maximising is earnings. If Americans are foolish enough to pay so much for someone as you rightly say is coming to the end of his career, then good luck to him. I do wonder if they realise that his best days are behind him and that he has been unable to command a first team place in Madrid, but good look to the man, i wish him well. Also i feel the life style of the rich and famous in california will be a big draw for his wife, I think this will have a lot to do with his decision to leave madrid, has he has already made more money than he can ever spend

Yeah, somehow I think little miss spicey had a lot to do with the decision too. I think she had a big taste of it when she was in 'the biz' so to speak and on top and enjoyed that lifestyle. I'm not so sure he can have that lifestyle and still play with any umph, but then again he has been able to maintain well enough even when she was still out and running around. Perhaps he has a good head on his shoulders. But I do agree, we've seen the best he's got but even his not so great ways could still draw a crowd.

My husband is a football fan, and he figures Beckham's career may be slowing down as he gets older. He can still get paid really well by playing in North America becauese he'll be a top player here for quite a few more years before he has to retire.

Well he'll have to play soccer I'm sure! But I agree they're hoping he's an 'attraction' more than a key player. Who knows. I sure wish I could have even 1/2 that money! lol

The rumour stunned me the first time I heard it. But now, I'm really happy he signed LA because the other rumour was about him coming back to Manchester United, and that would have seriously damaged MU. So, I wish him all the best in The States!

This deal is insane, no one is worth that much money, and like you say he is at the end of his career, not the beginning.

Yeah, that's what I found sooooo weird about it. The only thing I can think is that they're hoping his "hottie" status with the women and his "one of the most awesome players" with the men and sports freaks women (I'm one.. lol) will want to see him play. I can honestly say what I've seen of him when he wasn't injured was good, not the most superb but definitely well above average.

I like soccer ok and he seems to be good but i also think they overpaid him wayyyyyyyyyy too much i wouldn't have paid him that but i guess thats what they do to try to get a better team.

You could have knocked me down with a feather when I heard it. This is far too much money to be given to any one person. The latest is that Victoria has also been offered a photoshoot by Playboy. Let's hope they give some of the money to the people who are dying of starvation throughout the world.

Yeah, it is kind of hard to watch that kind of money get tossed around like peanuts when we have so many issues that money could at least HELP, perhaps not alleviate, around the world.

When I first read the article about it, I had to check it again. 5 years for $250 million dollars??? This is the largest per-year contract that a sports star has ever been given. The only one that comes close was baseball's Alex Rodrigues at 10 years for $250 million. He had better perform really well if he doesn't want to become the laughing stock of soccer.

I'm thinking they're hoping HE is the answer to making soccer more accepted in America. Who knows for sure but I agree, for that kind of money he better make kicks standing on his head and backwards! lol

I also surprised; why a football star go to LA team which is absolutely lower in rank than REAL MADRID??!!!although that David's is low in these times but it doesn't mean to do that. I knew that David has his own ambition to make a difference in the football in US.also the income is high "one million $ per week" is so attractive.

I couldn't believe it either. I mean, I don't know anyone who thinks soccer is anything but boring. How can a sport whose final score is often 1-0 be a good spectator sport? And to pay this kind of money for a guy to come to a country where many people agree with this sentiment seems like a poor business investment.

Yes I am very surprised. I really never thought he'd leave England. Cause really Soccer is all that over there. Over here, not so much. Though my husband LOVES soccer and especially the woman's team. But I guess if the money is right all sorts of amazing changes can happen.

I'm not surprized with that. Figo is going to Saudi Arabia!

Beckham is an international star so LA Galaxy will get back all the money they pay him in merchandise sales I am sure. He is not going over there for the football anyway. His career is over in England and he needs a new set of fans to idolise him and his pain in the butt wife. England have certainly had enough of her especially!!My advise to all you Americans, turn the sound down when the Beckhams are talking on your TV. They are so boring. I am so glad they are off to America and not coming back to England. As you may have gathered I can't stand them!!!

Yes you are right... Its a brilliant piece of marketing. And he'll probably prove to be worth every penny. He's always been a superb athlete and I've always admired him on the pitch, apart from one very glaring incident in fifteen years at the top. Good luck to ya David... Proving that brains can be bought if you really are skilled at what you do. :)
