There are many reasons for a person to be emancipated.
State laws, age of consent, and the resons given, and by whom...all make a difference. Back when I was in high school I knew of several students who were emanicpated because their parents just couldn't deal with them anymore, and the STUDENTS initiated the action.
There is no set rule, and in some states there might not be any actual law, but a vbelief that is passed around and has been accepted as the community standard. Check with an attorney who handles family law where you live.

Thank you very much for the advice I will contact an attorney as soon as I can. It is for my step daughter her father seems to think that because she is on SSI for a learning disability that he can stop her from moving out. Thank you again

It all depends on what is going on in your home......If you have a good reason you can do it anytime....Like your being abused or your parnets are alochics....But you will need to see an attenory because there is a lot of paper work envoled.
You need to ge legal advice before you do anything..Remember once you do that you can't go back.......

This information is for my step daughter, her father drinks and does pot quite frequently and he thinks that because she is on SSI for a learning disability that he can stop her from leaving. I dont think that he can because she is 16 and has had enough.

I thought it was 16 as long as you had a place to go and a way to support yourself. When did it change and why?

Its basically depends on law and your parents permission and satisfaction on whether you are able to stay independently or not.
