I am a server, and truthfully we all shoot for earning 20% of the bill total. I was wondering what percentage people normally tip, or if they don't even compute it and just leave what they "think" is okay. And another thing, do you let your teenagers go out to eat without teaching them proper dinning out manners and tipping manners.

In Australia tipping is not normal practice and so we only tip if we get really good service. Generally we would leave 10% of the bill and the waiter/waitress has to give us really good service to warrant that. I might also add that waiters and waitresses here in Australia get a decent wage and I understand that in most instances it is considerably higher than in most other countries. Some children are taught manners but once they are out of their parents' sight, they forget all that they have been taught and this is more so if they are with a group of their peers and are aiming to 'impress'. Good luck in future and I hope you only ever get kind and generous customers who know their manners. :)

I tip 20%, although my husband never goes over 15%, which is frustrating when the service has been good.

I have friends who are servers and they have indicated, when we go out, that for good service 20% is the going rate. 15% for less than desired service.
