Why are people picky when choosing discussions to respond to?

Here's what I don't get here on mylot. Why are people so picky when choosing which discussions to respond to. I mean either way they get money, so they should want to respond to as many discussions as they get. But I see a lot of people with 0 responses to their discussions, so it's a loss for the discussion poster and the non-responder. Why can't we all help one another to get more money? I try to reply to all of the posts that I see, because I know I'm not only benefitting myself, but also the person that posting the discussion. Has anyone else noticed this as well?

You are so correct. Unfortunately, mylot didn't get a grip on the fact that many members joined early on and use this site as a pay check. Those that have the mentality that mylot is their pay check, are driven by the earnings and to them you need to post as much as you can all day long, which is why you have the meaningless discussions and responses on mylot.

I agree, I cant just answer somwone's discussion when I have no knowledge or experience with the topic. I like to pick and choose. Sure I have a few zeros in my own discussions, but I rather have someone answer in a few sentences logically, than just saying 2 or 3 nonsense words. The money isnt everything (though it doesnt hurt), but I want to reach out to people, too.

Exactly - I agree. I can't see me giving up my job anytime soon on the money I get from here - so I just do it for the interest and good conversation. If I make a small amount at the end of the month then all well and god - but I don't post for that reason!

Yeap this is why. I don't want to waste my time commenting on discussions that I have no intrest in. I mean I don't know who the best bowler is for the indian cricket team. So I am not going to respond to those. I actually want to make a good post that represents my actual opinion and not something that I am just spewing to get $$$

I would agree with all these folks. A response is to be made on something where I have an opinion and what I can talk about. Money is just one aspect of the whole story of MyLot. There are many more interesting aspects to it as well. The main intent of this website is NOT to help you make money. The money part is just to attract more crowd.

I'm picky because I believe quality responses help me make money. So, I can only answer questions and join in discussions where I can honestly contribute. I can't post in every discussion because I don't have enough knowledge to be helpful in every discussion.

If I answer every discussion, even those that dont interest me or I know nothing about, my rating will drop, the quality of my posts too and soon Mylot will just be a badly-paying job.
I only reply to discussions from my interests, and earn $20 with only 10 daily comments.

Wow, you're pretty good! I comment only on things I find worth commenting on (to me), and I don't make that much. Or are you saying you make $20 a month? Still, that really isn't bad at all for only 10 comments a day!

Sawsen, I wouldn't normally respond to this type of discussion, but I noticed it while posting to another.
Many of us on myLot are here for the "deep and meaningfuls" not for the money. While the little we receive is somewhat of a bonus, it could hardly be called an incentive or a payment for the time spent.
Many of us enjoy intelligent, logical, polite conversations, not necessarily with people of like minds. I enjoy "talking" with people of differing views and I have learnt a lot by looking at things from a different viewpoint. My basic views haven't changed, and I doubt they will, but I've been able to view some things differently and have learnt to respect people's rights to believe as they see fit.
We are able to make long distance friends on myLot and enjoy sharing not only in discussions, but a bit of fun and even some sadness and problems.
I think it could be an idea, as you suggest, to post to new myLotians, to help them to become enthusiastic and more conscious of the higher ideals involved.

Don't get discouraged -- I have several topics I started awhile ago and no responses, someone will run across them one day and respond out the blue. Just keep posting and responding. It is tremendous amount fun. Happy posting :) Best wishes!

I understand that most people, including myself, are here for quality discussions, and not necessarily for the money. But as I've mentioned earlier, I think it would nice to help out those new mylotians, not even necessarily new mylotians, but people with no responses to their discussions. Because I think if you can post one response to a discussion, then other people might notice it and those interested in that subject would want to post. But if no one posts, the discussion never makes it to the top list, and not many people see it, and therefore no one posts, and that mylotian gets discouraged to post anything.

I have been here 2 days and have started 4 discussions. Only 1 has had responses, and I would have to assume that the other 3 are boring or of no interest to anyone else.

Well i am a little picky cause if its not interesting to me, i cant give them a good answer, it would probably be short and stupid...So i dont even waste my time there...If i am going to respond its going to be meaningful, and not just a two worded response!

I understand that, and all of my responses are 4 or more sentences long. But I'm saying for the ones that have 0 responses, I try to help them out if I can, even if I don't really have much to say, because I know it will get other people to respond. And usually the people that would be interested in responding to such discussions, don't get to see them because they never get into the top list and so therefore no one gets the chance to respond.

Well, that is normal. You don't answer to things that are not of your interest ... And of course the more active discussion get more views then more responses

Ok here is my Point why
I am not going to respond to something where I can not give a decent answer just to earn money and at the same time rip of mylot because that is what you are doing if you just reply to pathetic Discussions and that sort of thing can break a Site and then where are you going to earn your Money and if it is just the money you are after and not the Fun, Friends and enjoyment then ok

I personally like to respond to discussion I am maybe a little knowledgeable in so that I can add to a discussion or I may go in because I want to learn something also.
I don't see the need to go into one I have no interest in when there are more than I can handle of the ones I do have an interest in. :)

I only respond to discussions that interest me. Also, if the discussion is about something that I know absolutely nothing about, I don't respond because I feel I wouldn't be contributing anything useful. I am not here just for the money. I like to read what people have to say about many different topics.

I will just have to say ditto to many of the responses you have received. I also am here for more then money, I am meeting new people, gathering new information and ideas, hopefully able to help others through some things because of my experiences and having a tremendously enjoyable time doing it. I have faith that the discussion I have to my name with 0 responses will one day catch the eye/mind of another user. Because I have a few of these, I try to look for the discussions with no responses at least once a session, as well as new user discussions and find one that I feel I can respond to honestly and sincerely if not I just move on. I thinks it is great that so many mylot users are picky in their choices of discussions. :)

I don't respond to every discussion because I find that I can't in some cases. Sometimes I just don't have an answer to post and I don't want to post just a super short answer for the sake of posting. If a discussion doesn't apply to me at all, I usually just pass it on.

First of all not everyone is here for money so people will try to choose for the discussions which they like. More importantly it is not possible for average users to know all the subjects. Suppose the topic is on a particular lawsuit in a US city. Now users from different parts of the world will not be able to clearly understand the subject, so most probably they will skip the discussion. I feel it's normal.
If you want to mean that we should try to answer most discussions then I can tell you there are many users who are doing just that. Thanks to myLot we have a new user discussions link and no reply discussions link. They are very useful. I believe we can try to keep zero reply disucssions to the minimum.

well yes you are doing a good job by responding to all discussions but you have to remember that each person is different and not all subjects are interesting to everybody.i also choose discussions which im interested in or on which i can say something rather than posting a bad quality meaningless reply.that way we can have good quality discussions here.

the topic should be interesting to you and also it should have points for discussion otherwise it is difficult to respond, you have to answer only yes or no or those type of answers only because you want extra points you can't answer such discussions so if you answer af ew but answer them well I think it is worth.

Some discussions are just not worth responding to...they are either incomprehensible, about something that is fairly country specific, or about something I know nothing about. I am not going to spend time writing a response to a discussion that I know nothing about, just for the sake of a penny.
A good number of people, myself included, aren't here for the small sum of money you might receive, rather for the chance to meet new people and engage in intelligent thought provoking discussions.

well i think pepole are picky in picking topics to respond to because its not about how many posts u make but the quality of them... it has been seen that u make more money by posting quality posts rather than just increasing your post count by writing short and irrelevant answers...u can only make a quality post if u have knowledge about the discussion..thats why people are picky..

I only respond to discussions that interest me. I've occasionally read through some of the posts that come up on mylot's homepage that don't interest me and thought about responding but couldn't think of a quality response to the post. I've noticed that there's also quite a lot of discussions that only require a yes/no answer, I never respond to those because I don't think it's providing a quality answer or promoting the type of discussion that mylot's all about.
However, I do see your point about posts with 0 responses, because I get the impression that these posts seem to get 'pushed to the back' because of their lack of interest and the most frequently replied to posts stay nearer the front of the que on the mylot homepage, so naturally they are more likely to get responses as they are the first ones that people read.
Forgive me if i'm wrong with this - these are just my first impressions as a new user. So tell me, is there an easier way to find these posts with 0 responses?
