RAM = Random Access Memory and is made by silicium and it contains bilions of tranzistors. is differend than ROM (Read Only Memory).. RAM is loosing data writen if you stop giving him 1 logical (vary from 3.5VDC to 15VDC) but ROm doesn't loose that datas.. ROM can be writen just once and RAM multiple times...

Random access memory (usually known by its acronym, RAM) is a type of data store used in computers. It takes the form of integrated circuits that allow the stored data to be accessed in any order — that is, at random and without the physical movement of the storage medium or a physical reading head.
The word "random" refers to the fact that any piece of data can be returned quickly, and in a constant time, regardless of its physical location and whether or not it is related to the previous piece of data. This contrasts with storage mechanisms such as tapes, magnetic disks and optical disks, which rely on the physical movement of the recording medium or a reading head. In these devices, the movement takes longer than the data transfer, and the retrieval time varies depending on the physical location of the next item.

Ram is the memory needed to run programs on your computer.
Windows XP needs 128Mb of memory to start your computer.
Then you need some more for your other applications. Your could still run your computer on 256Mb of RAM... but everything will be very slow.
These days your basic computer would have 512Mb of RAM.
Your RAM comes in the form of two or three small boards of memory which slot into your motherboard. You can either add memory to your computer if you have a spare slot... or replace the boards (usually called "sticks" because they are small) with new sticks containing more memory.
However you need to check what you got before buying anything as the new computers of today have a different kind of RAM which is not compatible with the old computers.
All the sticks should be the same.
3 sticks of 64Mb or 3 x 128Mb or 3 x 256Mb etc...
But you can also have one single one of 512Mb and keep the other two slots empty.
