what is router?

i only know about the meaning of ROUT I dont know what is this and inthe computer whats the meaning of ROUTER but i want to know that the meaning of this.

Router for Internet Connection - The diagram shows a router being used to connect many computers to one Internet line.
Even I did not know what a router was until last month. In December when I got my ADSL facilities, I was told that if I buy a Modem for $80 I can only use one computer, but If I buy a router for $110 I can use it for two computers and even more if I add a hub to it. So I bought a Router. It is the one that recieves by broad band Internet line and routes it to the computer. How it works on many computers is explained in the diagram.
