Online Safety

I've been a little concerned at the carelessness of some MyLot users. Please DON'T give out personal details like your date of Birth, Names, email addresses, Paypal ID's. Even things like your mother's name or middle name are unsafe to post on public boards like this because banks often use such data to verify that you are who you are.
Did you know that the majority of internet fraud is connected to phishing and Paypal and Ebay are the chief victims?
Please think before you respond to discussions asking "what's your date of birth" and the like. As for the people posting such discussions, please stop - your intentions might be good, but others might not be.
Thanks for reading - I feel so much better now I've got that off my chest!

I raised the topic hoping that people would read the thread and at least be warned.
I think the online crooks can only be defeated if potential victims are armed with information.

Hey! If I've saved you from potentially being robbed, I'm very glad! I just think the more people are armed with information against the sharrks, the safer the world will be.

You are right - we don't actually know who's online, though sometimes the virtual world feels just like the real one! And the phishers just need a few innocent people to prey upon.

I strongly agree with what you are saying. I have drilled this information into my children's mind since day one. My sister followed a link in her email that she thought was from paypal, it wasn't and someone was able to access her account.

You can't be too careful. I think people tend to be way too trusting.

I'm pretty sure that phishers and other sharks surf boards like this and MySpace, looking for a bit of carelessness that they can take advantage of.
