What medications do you take for Migraines?

Hello all!
I'm interested in comparing what medications people here on myLot have tried to treat their migraine pain. There are a wide variety of migraine treatments out there, some more heavy-duty than others, and I'm interested to know what people have tried that works (and doesn't work) for them.
For me, my most successful medication so far has been Zomig. It's actually one of the first medications I tried for my migraines, and I've been very lucky that it works so well for me. I find that even if I take Zomig when my migraine is in full gear, it stops the migraine and I feel much better with 2 hours. If I take it before my migraine is fully entrenched, then it can stop it in its tracks.
I've also tried Imitrex (not that effective for me) and Fiorinol (knocks me right out and makes me dopey, but it works).
What about you? What treatments and medications do you use to treat your migraine headaches?

I normally try to avoid taking anything if I can. I will use bengay (or something similar) at my temples and on my neck. I will also try drinking some coffee and/or having some chocolate because the caffiene can help with the migraine. However if that doesn't work I'll first try and OTC medication like Excedrin or a Sinus headache med (if I think it might have been triggered from that) and then sleep. If that still doesn't work I take Midrin. It's a perscription medication that does work for me but I do have to sleep with it. i also wait because I don't have insurance and I don't want to have to go to the doctor and get a new script if I don't have to.

we share the same sentiments. i don't take medicines if i could help it. usually, a cup of strong coffee relieves me of my migraines (and yes! caffeine can, indeed, help relieve the pain). if i don't get relief from that, i take ibufropen.

I'd love to not have to take anything, but I know I'll be in worse shape if I don't. And I know what it's like not to have medical insurance - I have insurance now through school for the first time in about 3.5 years! It's great to have my prescriptions covered again!

wrrdsister, right now nothing - I'm still nursing my nine month old. I will be weaning him very soon even though I wanted to get to a year. My migraines have worsened in both severity and frequency. I was just talking about possibilities with my doctor before my pregnancy. He had wanted to put me on a beta blocker and Imitrex. I hadn't decided. I'd taken Excedren Migraine before that but it wasn't cutting it.
I will be interested in reading what others have to say so I can explore options. I like the idea of Zomig as you say you can take it after the migriane is full blown.
For now, I have a soda though I've never really gotten into the caffiene thing and the midwife had told me to soak my feet. HAven't actually tried that last!

I'm sorry to hear your migraines have worsened, artemis! I do hope that after your son is weaned you can find something (quickly!) that works for you.
That's a huge issue for chronic pain and illness - what do you do about medication when you are pregnant, then nursing, a child? Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and if you have any more details you'd like to share, I'd love to hear them. As someone who is considering having children in the future, this is something for which I need to prepare! :)
I think the soaking your feet suggestion comes from the fact that it will increase the blood flow to your feet and lower half of your body, thereby reducing the blood flow to your head therefore relieving some of the pounding pressure in your head. I'd like to know if that works too!
Thanks for your response, and take care!

That's exactly why I started this thread: I'm always on the look out for new ways of treating my migraines. I find sharing information with people in communities like myLot can be such a wealth of information! I'm glad you've found this topic helpful!

IMITREX INJECTIBLE!!!! That's how I spell Relief! For many years I was able to control my migraines with the standard Rx meds. Then Excedrin came out with an OTC that was really great - problem was, I found out I couldn't take it because it is a blood-thinner. Then, the worst of all nightmare came. I started waking up in the middle of the night with a full-blown attack!
Previously I had the little warning signs - the "halo or aura". Mine came as bright little flashy flourescent lights approximately one have hour before the headache would come. There was a very old Rx that I used to treat at that time and I don't even know if it is still on the market, I believe it was called Caffergot. Spelling may be wrong - but the idea is there was a lot of caffeine in it. The caffeine opens up your blood veins/vessles and gets blood flowing to your brain more quickly and that is why it helps to relieve a migraine (if it works).
Well, when the migraine comes on at you while you are sleeping, there's not much you can do before it gets there! What a shock! That is when my doctor prescribed the injectables. I'm having a spelling-impaired night tonight, please forgive. It gets rid of the headache in less than 15 minutes. Ahhhh! Of course, you must be sitting (I prefer to sit on the potty as I inject in my upper thigh), then I slowly meander to my bedroom, put my chilled lavender eye mask on, and let the medicine do its work. I have tried staying up but tend to get a bit dizzy and wobbly - I do recommend lying down right after the shot.
Now, on the even brighter side - since then my doctor has also started me on Topamax. It is a miracle! I used to have migraines 3-5x a week, sometimes needing to go to the hospital for something stonger than the Imitrex. Since the Tomamax, I only get migraines about once every 2 months or with sudden/drastic weather chanages.

My warning sign - what I call a precurser and I think its called a prodrome or something close - is tingling on the top of my head - like its going to sleep. For two weeks in August or July my neck would get really stiff in a matter of like a minute and then in would rush the headache. I thought, although the following headache and its afteraffects were an exact match to a migraine (I've had so many kinds of headaches and migraine is most prevailant) since it seemed to involve the muscles that it was a stress headache, but as it turns out its all part of the migraine. Stiff neck can be a precurser as well.
I think I'd be nervous about injections. The one thing I'm taking into consideration are medications that I have to take before the headache crashes in - what if you're being in a place you can stop to take medication and it being too late for it to work, or what if you are so involved that you do don't notice the warning signs. Is Topamax and Imatrex (the latter suggested by my DR before pregnancy) ones that you can take after a whopper of a migraine has hit full on?

I usually take feverfew. I prefer taking herbs than over the counter medications. I'm really picky about what I put in my body. So for me, the more naturl the better. I also up my water intake

i usually get migraine also especially i am always in front of my computer. The usual solution i make is to drink cold beverages. But if that's not enough to ease the pain. I drink BIOGESIC or ADVIL. It's a popular medicine here in the philippines.

I've been taking 1000 mg of Ibuprofen when I get that sensation in my temple or eye that tells me a migraine is coming. I've had them for about 15 years and have learned to recognize the warning signs (for me). My doctor doesn't love how I'm treating my migraines and has suggested I try a prescription med, might do so, but need to research them out. This looks like a good thread for doing that!
By the way, the max dose for ibuprofen in a day is 1700 mg... so my doctor may be right. I take 5 pills (200 mg) all at once. It works if I take it early enough. If I wait too long, it still helps, but doesn't work as well. I usually drink coffee or diet coke too... that seems to help a little.

Aaaaahhh, lavender oil, I love it! I don't find it stops my migraines or headaches, but it does soothe me when I'm feeling miserable from them. :)

Most of my migraines are actually sinus related. (Does that mean they aren't really migraines? I get trails and auras and everything.)
Anyway, that means most of the meds I take are designed to take pressure off of the sinueses. Lots of antihistimines combined with painkillers. If I time it right, I'm fine. If I start too late, it doesn't do anything.

Nope, I think people can get migraines for all sorts of reasons. A friend of mine's migraines are connected to her sinuses as well. She takes Advil Cold and Sinus for her migraines, and swears by it. The regular Advil doesn't do as good a job for her.

I use Tyenol for Mygraines. It works for me, but I dont have them as acute as some others who need a prescription. After taking 2 of them, I go into a cool, dark room, lie down and meditate or nap if I can. Sometimes on worse days a long, warm soak in the tub with the lights out does wonders.

Sometimes if you're incredibly tense, a nice hot bath can be great! Even if your headache doesn't go away, it still feels good. :)

I usualy just take Tylenol. Tylenol works effectively but gets me sleepy. But it still helps... It is probably the best thing
because i've tried different things and the best i've actualy had was tylenol, the others don't work very well...

Well when i got Migraine i usually try to lay down a bit and take a short rest. If it doesn't help me i try some normal aspirine and wait like an hour if this one deosnt help (fortuantelly is does almost always) i try to take the Paracetamol Max (it's the strongest aspirine i can get without a doctor's attention) it has the maximum amouth of Paracethamol which helps in headaches. And this is the one that must help - if it doesn't it means that no other thing will be ever able to help me :|

Excedrin works very well for migraines but it keeps me awake and I often get migraines in the evening, so that's not good. Luckily I only get migraines once or twice a month. I also have to take the Excedrin while the migraine is just starting, or else it doesn't really work.

I don't treat my migraines, or tension headaches, or sinus headaches... I stopped them cold!! I no longer have them!
I'm on pain pills for chronic back and wrist problems, and couldn't stand any more medication... a none of it was working for me.
I had all of the headaches listed above, with the migraines so severe that I had to go to the hospital 1-2 times a month for injections.
I began using magnesium, vitamin B-2, and stress B-complex... it took 3 weeks to go to work, but I haven't had ANY kind of headache in over 4 months! You must take them every day... but these are water-soluble vitamins, and a mineral people just don't get enough of, and they are vital to good health.
I am trying to spread the word and see if this helps other people as much as it has me... no one should have to hurt like that!!

Although I do not have migraines, I would focus on proper nutrition, sleep and rest (seeing the lack of these can very easily lead to migraines). Again, I am of the opinion that there is just no illness or disease that cannot be cured with proper nutrition and some form of daily exercise. Below is a starter for your healthy lifestyle:

Have you been diagnosed with migraines or do you experience some of the unique symptoms of migraines? You can have severe headaches but not have migraines. There are several other types like cluster headaches, tension headaches, etc.

I have taken Imitrex for migraines and it works well for me. The only thing is you have to take it right when the headache is coming on. Also, it can make you sleepy. I usually try and take motrin with the Imitrex. Together they work well for me. If the headache is bad and last more than a day I go to the doctor and get a toridal shot and that usually works. If I also feel nauseous I will ask for a shot for the nausea too.

Hi there. I used to be on topamax for headaches (and appetite supression). I also am on a blood pressure med which is known for taking away migraines - metoprolol. Additionally, there are meds out there specifically FOR migraines. My father gets a med called Butalbital, with aspirin and caffeine, which works very well.
This discussion is old...so I hope you found a proper treatment!
