Painkillers or just Plain-killers?

I was raised in a household where in my Dad has this thing about going "natural". Meaning, he believes in all natural process. Like taking in medication for example. We had this long discussion about pain killer medicines. It's supposed to stop or numb the source of pain whenever you take one right? So he would go, it should have a side effect somewhere. It's not a natural process. Your body is aching for or because of something. It only means that it's telling you something wrong. In some way, he has a point. Body reactions don't happen overnight. Some takes a while before it kicks in. Like for some cases, when a girl takes a painkiller for dismonorrhea or pms, the period gets delayed and for some instances, it stops. Other cases affects the heart or other organs at a latter time when a certain amount of painkillers have been taken. So for a person really in pain, how does he know what is enough or too much? With the pain present, would it make him think of possible consequences of side effects? And do doctors really warn us about this?
