If you take a women's course, does that make you a feminist or a lesbian?

I am now taking a women's course at school and I took it because I feel that women are neglected when it comes to high school history classes. Since I am a woman, I decided it would be good to take that class. But whenever I tell people I'm taking that class people sound astounded as if I'm becoming a raging feminist or something, or I'm close to being a lesbian or something. There are such huge stereotypes aginst feminists that people are just closeminded about learning about our history.

There is no reason that taking a course like that would make you a lesbian or a feminist. People don't necessarily understand that there is a history and culture to women, and it is in fact, very interesting to learn! I took a women's sociology (sociology of gender, actually, was what it was called) course in college, and there were guys in there, and it didn't mean that they were gay, either. People are just too closed minded to understand sometimes, and you just have to set them straight, as far as I can tell.

I am surprised you getting such preposterous comments! No way, one dosent become a feminist or a lesbian by just enrolling in a women's course. I frankly dont understand the people who held such a narrow views. I dont know from which part of world are you but in India where Society is still by in large conservative(things are changing fast due to booming middle class) such observations dosent come in majority.

Every woman (and man) ned to know their rights and how to deal with life. I don't think attendinga course allows anyone to attache a label to you.
I attended parenting classes for some support with my special needs sons behaviour last year, did that make me a bad parent because I wanted to find new strategies?
Choose what you do in life someone will be difficult about it or tease you a bit. Do what you want, don't worry about closed minded people.

It doesn't make you either. It just means you have an interest in women's rights--not that you are a radical or a lesbian. I took a women's course in college and I am neither a lesbian or a feminist. The professor was openly gay and she tortued the one guy in the class to the point where he finally dropped the class. I don't think that would fly in this day and age. But I digress. Don't worry about it.

nope, it doesn't. people are subjected to their own interest, so if that course interest you it doesn't automatically conclude that you are a lesbian or a feminist. i am an girl and an engr by profession, but it doesn't mean that i am lesbian, it just happened that i like dealing with numbers. that's just that simple.

You are neither a feminist or a lesbian and even if you are it is not anybody's business. I am not at all surprised that this sort of stereotyping still goes on, but unfortunately some people have very narrow minds and nothing at all to fill them with. I believe wanting to do this course shows that you are interesting and interested in learning and that is all. Just ignore the people who make disparaging remarks or things like that and imagine them in a napkin/diaper cos that always brings your view of them into perspective. :)

Psssh. Don't listen to those people. While I find gender studies to be rather boring, myself, they are important classes to take. And if you're interested in it, take it! Now is the time to learn what you want before the real world demands other things.

No,definitely that has not make you a feminist. It only has a lot to do with your interest and the opportunity that surfaced in tune with your interest.

Not necessarily. Taking the class doesn't necessarily mean you agree with what they say, and it's good for conservatives even, to take the class, so they can educate themselves better on the viewpoints they oppose, so as to better defend their own views against the views of feminists.

I know how you feel, not that I took up a woman's course or anything, but some people are just so not getting it and they make a big deal out of being a feminist. That's the bad side of being in a patriarchal society. You don't even mean anything bad in taking up that course, and still people would judge you. Why dont they just try to know your reason first before they say anything, right? Dont worry dear, you're neither if you ask me, and almost everyone here.

All it means is that you're better educated than the ignorant people who are astounded at someone taking a women's course.

It makes you a woman..that's it. A proud woman at that. And if someone tells you that there is something wrong with that, well, I'm sure you could think of a few things to tell them. I'm not a feminist, but I am proud to be a female and know that I deserve equal treatment, after all, it is the year 2007 :P

No, this doesn't make you a feminist nor a lesbian. It just makes you interested in things you like. I also would like to take a womens studies course at the university I am attending because I also have some same views. People just need to open up and acknowledge that there is a history about everything.
