Should we put all 12 year old girls on birth control?

If we did we would have a lot fewer girls falling pregnant. What do you think? Would this work? Would it lower the pregnancy rate for young teens?

While I agree it would help with teenage pregnancy, I can't agree with it. The option should be available, yes, but they shouldn't be forced to. The government should have no rights over a woman's body in that area. And birth control may seem like a small thing, but it's against some religions for starters. Even the smallest infringement on personal rights is too much. A woman's body is her own, and she has the right to decide what she uses, not the government.

No not the government the parents should do it and no one should look at that twice. It should be done with all girls so that they have a fighting chance of making it thru high school/

But the only way to ensure that *all* girls are put on birth control is to make it a law. There's no other way to do it.

I think this one should be left up to the parents. An observant parent should be able to tell if their daughter is vulnerable to a pregnancy (I realize that sometimes things happen no matter how close you watch them, but most of the time you get clues). This could backfire and lead to more STD's since the girls know they don't have to worry about preganancy. That is the main reason I think the decision should lie with the parents.

I don't think that girls who are 12 years old should be put on birth control. I just do not see how that is healthy. Plus, it just seems like we would be giving them permission to go ahead and do things we don't want them to be doing in the first place. It would depend on what type of birth control because if we are talking about pills - they would have to remember to take them faithfully. Again, I just don't think it is a good idea.

Well it was an idea to reduce teen pregnancy and I do understand the idea of it not being really all that good for the girl physically but in my town there are many young girls age 12,13, 14 having babies. Something needs to be done to reduce the number of these unfortunate pregnancies.

its a very brilliant idea! by this we can lower the rate of teenage pregnancies, this is very applicable to those parents that doesnt have enough quality time for their children. i hope moralist can get the point of this question.

No, I think it would be a horrible idea. Not only would the hormones in birth control pills affect the natural production of hormones in a young girl, which could cause some serious problems, but it would be like telling your little girl it is OK to sleep around. I think if there is a chance that a 12 year old daughter is active in that way, then the parent needs to take a look at how they are raising the child. A 12 year old girl should be having slumber parties, and giggle fits. She is not even a teenager yet and far from being adult enough to make an adult decision. Make sure she holds on to her innocence as long as she can, because once it is gone, you have lost your little girl.

I would never put my daughter on birth control at 12 years old... That would just give her the ok to go out and sleep with who ever cause she would think she couldnt get pregnant and since mom or dad put me on it .. its ok to do. I dont think so! Besides i know someone whos parents did that and you can only be on the birth control pill for like 10 years so whats going to happen when your daughters 22 yrs old and going to college and all that and wants to sleep with someone... But cant be on birth control then she comes up pregnant and has to drop out or something. Just teach your daughters not to sleep around that young!i say that if your girls are taught not to and whats right then most likely they wont... if they do and for some reason get pregnatn dont give them the option of dropping out, Make them finish.

I don't agree with this idea, for many reasons. I think that is a crucial time of emotional development in a young person's life, and if we assume responsibility for their bodies that way, they'll never develop it for themselves. They have to learn to struggle with the hard choices and develop a concept of right and wrong, and also, the self respect to cherish and protect their own bodies. Also, there are many religious and philosophical reasons why people would not want their daughter to use birth control. And I would worry about the effect of hormone based birth control on a young girl already going through dramatic changes because of puberty.

I believe when they start their monthly cycle it would be wise. It would help with the pregnancy, plus help them with cramps and being regular.
