Have you ever caught an Alligator Gar? These fish can grow to tremendous lengths. During one of the hurricanes we had here a long time ago, we were driving on the levee just keeping an eye on the flooding waters. All of a sudden, a HUGE alligator gar came up to the surface. That thing was at least 25 feet long. It was longer than our truck by about 10 feet.

I have never caught one. But I saw one in Lake Norman in North Carolina. I had to go look it up to see what it was. I saw it 5 or 6 times, only at night in the shallows. It was about 4 feet long. I only saw it 2 summers ago. It wasn't there this past summer.

I have also seen some that size in shallow waters at night. Funny thing is the really large ones tend to lurk in parts of a lake that are not too deep and have trees or other obstacles in the water. The reason I figure is to avoid being caught by people with rod and reels or nets.
Thanks

The alligator gar, Atractosteus spatula, is a primitive ray-finned fish. It is also referred to as the gator gar. Unlike other gars, the mature alligator gar possesses a dual row of large teeth in the upper jaw. It is these remarkably alligator-like teeth which gives it its name. The dorsal surface of the alligator gar is a brown or olive-color, while the ventral surface tends to be a lighter color. Their scales are diamond-shaped and interlocking (ganoid) and were once used by Native Americans for jewelry.
The alligator gar is the largest species of gar and is the largest exclusively freshwater fish in North America. It can be as long as eight to twelve feet and often weighs at least 100 pounds at maturity. The current world record alligator gar weighed 279 pounds and was caught in the Rio Grande River in 1951. Even larger alligator gars — over 300 pounds — have been caught by trotliners.

The only thing GOOD about those fish are that they put up an amazing fight once they're that big. My friend and I would go out during the nights during the summer and gaff them with jigs for fun.
