Any suggestions on how I can find someone I lost 39 years ago?

As I get closer to 40, I'm having lots of questions about my real father, a man I have never met. I would like to find him or his other children. I'm told that I have a pair of half-sisters, at the very least out there and I would like to meet them. I've tried some of the generic people search sites, but I don't have a lot of information other than his name, his wife's name and possibly the name (maiden) of one of my half-sisters. And, of course, his name is fairly common. The last time anyone in my family had any contact with him was in 1976 and so far as I know, he has never even been told my name. I would like creative suggestions on how I might find him. Thanks!
