Is it fair that parents expect a lot from their childrens than they can give?

i had a frn he was very good student in the class.He used to stoood first in his class but for firsst time in his life..........he got second position in the class,,,,,, his father beated him so badly that he was bused on his entire body.He got so scared that he stopped talking with us...........within weeks his mind got imbalance.Aand one day he commited suicide........Was it right that he stood second and be beated so badly..IT wasnt right for me.
