why do many people smoke?

I am really confused. Efforts have been exerted by many health organizations in order to inform people the bad effects of smoking cigarettes. They say that smoking is the leading cause of almost all chronic diseases, that it is harmful to every part of the body, and so on.... that being a smoker can actually lead to death.
But then, why do many people still smoke? Is it just because they are addicted and they just can't stop (having the first stick triggered by curiosity, triggers the addiction)? Should the media be blamed for using smoking as a sign of maturity, being cool, and the likes?
or do some people just want to make themselves sick? hahahaha...
whatever reasons you can think of, post it here. (",)

They want to act cool. Most of the people who smoke started when they were a teenager.
They want to belong in some kinda group. And if they don't start smoking, they won't be invited in the group.
I once you start with it, you can't stop.

They smoke because they believed that smoking can take them away from facing there problems!...Without knowing to side effects to their health!...They dont that smoking can cause them lung cancer!...It will become the trigger point of their lives!...But people smoke because they need attentions and they want to pretend that they are brave and strong!...It's like a mask for them that hides all their pains!...lolz

well, believe it or not, i actually enjoy smoking..i am aware of the health risks and am tired of them being such an issue.
there is a warning on each pack, that should be enough.
anti smokers have made a lot of progress turning smokers into the last pariahs of society, and it is ok..
what anti smoking groups don't realize is that the farther they push smoking to the unaccepted end of the graph, the more young people will take it up..

Isn't that the truth. I have a friend who is a non-smoker and I told her about some of the laws people are trying to pass to stop smokers, like the one in Bangor Maine and smoking in cars. She looked at me and stated "That's it. If they do that here I'm taking up smoking." She might not like smoking but she doesn't think the government should be telling us what to do with our own bodies. She is not a young person either, she's in her 40's but she's tired of everyone treating smokers like they are second class people.

I believe alot of people start smoking as teeneagers because their friends are doing it. Also some start just because they are bored and i have even known people to start smoking to keep from eating. The media may have some influnce but i don't believe they have alot.

I don't know, why would somebody eat a piece of chicken with trans fat in it? Because it tastes good!
Why would somebody shovel cake and cookies and other comfort food into themselves? Because it's a stress reliever!
Why would somebody eat a medium rare, fatty ribeye when it'll clog your arteries and make you keel over? Because you crave it and because it tastes good!

I smoked for about a year and there were a lot of different reasons that I started and kept doing it.
I came to college, a very liberal art school in the middle of the city, after living in the conservative suburbs of another city in a very religious household. So, I kind of went crazy and rebelled, doing the things I was always told I shouldn't do. So that's why it started, just me doing something that I originally viewed as off limits, the "forbidden fruit."
I continued because at my college smoking is one of the best ways to meet people. The dorms and all of our school buildings are smoke free, so between classes or any other time you go outside to smoke there are tons of people out there. And since you're standing around in the freezing cold, you pass the time talking to these people and then get a lot of new friends. So then all of my friends smoked and there seemed to be no good reason to quit.
I don't think I was ever physically addicted to the nicotine (at least not that I noticed), it was more of a habit, an excuse to get out of our dorm room or something to do during the breaks of our four hour classes.
I ended up quiting cold turkey because I moved out of the dorms and saw no need to punish myself anymore.

I think most of the people start smoking when they are teenagers beacuse of the influcence of society, that means friends and social groups, and they are less concerned about their health at this age. When they grow up it is more difficult for them to quit it.

that is were you are wrong. drinking can help the flow of your blood to circulate even better. if drinkers will take it moderately. but smoking doesn't have any benefits to give except the fact that smokers can die young and smell bad. so if you want to die young and smell like hell, then by all means continue puffing...

Me, I smoked when I was in college.. but now, I stopped that vice... I stopped it ever since I saw the pictures of people having lung cancer... It's really painful and I don't want to suffer from that kind of illness. My reason? I don't know,,, Id realized that I'm hooked with that vice but now I quit...hehe
