recently i found image that tickle me. It's an image of praying soldiers. as you can see on the picture, they are closing their eyes. I wonder what are they praying for? to kill the enemy? to win the battle? for their own safety? ... I used to think that it must be hard for soldiers to kill human lives. war is a justified killings. I can't accept it in any form, reason or excuse. What's your reaction seeing that picture?

My reaction to that picture? They are probably terrified. Praying to God to protect them and to forgive them for what may be about to happen. I just thank my stars that it is not me in a situation like that. I find it intersting that the picture "tickles" you?? Personally I find the picture extremely sad.

yes james, it's awaken some couriousity on me. does that make sense ? to ask God to forgive some sin that they would conduct ? ... what if i pray to God to forgive me because i want to put a bomb on a great departement store ? ... does that way could justified my future acts ? ... still i personally believe that killing is a sin no matter what reason behind it ...

I guess the most important for every person that if we can go back home to our family alive without any serious injury. I guess they pray for their safety, and the war to end very soon. I dont think they won't care if they win or lose as long as they can go back home alive.
War never easy for any soldier. As we know the soldier who get back from war have some psychological problems, they can't sleep well as the war always come to their nightmare every night. Remember the face of person that they killed.
May be we should pray too, we should grateful for the war that doesn't happen in our country

What tickles ME is imagining what the replies might have been if the people in those pictures were MOSLEM FIGHTERS ?Would there have been so many sympathetic posts about the plight of people having to "kill or be killed" ?
I respect someone who pays his life for honour and in defending himself and his country- that is called courage .
I cannot respect someone who will risk his life- and that of others- for PAY because he cannot get money another way and because he feels superior to the opponent -therefore less likely to die than them -makiing it easier to "sell" one's life for money without there being a just cause -those people are called "mercenaries"

i agree with you, i cannot respect anyone who risk his life other than defending his own life / his loved ones. There's no difference between religions for that matter according to my point of view.

Hahah, you are 100 % right, if i put some picture of moslem rebel praying ( from islamic army of Iraq ) for example, i guest the comment will be such as "hey looks, that terrorist are praying to god to help them kill infidels".

deladieri, it's not a matter of religion, fortunately, that picture above is not moslem pictures, yet i don't know their religion, but almost sure that they were christian.
both of your comments are somehow mentioning about moslem vs christian, while im not mentioning about that religion ...

My reaction to the photo is different from yours. I do not wonder what they are praying for. When I was a soldier I had many friends who were combat veterns. They all told me they essentially prayed for the same thing. Peace.

More than anyone, soldiers hate war. Except for less than 1 in 100, they all wish the civilian leaders of each side would rely more on diplomacy.
In these modern times of war crimes, rules against looting, raping, and pillaging, what do you think any soldier can get out of a war except alive and unhurt?
Every soldier I ever knew prayed for peace, especially during time of war.

So it tickles you that these soldiers, black and white, male and female, have made sacrifices for the protection of the United States? Of, course they are praying, they're at war. They are probably praying that they all come back from their mission alive ... they are probably praying that as many lives as possible will be spared. They are probably praying for an end to a war that they didn't start so that they can rejoin their families ... they might even be praying that those at home appreciate their efforts, because while you and I are sitting at home in front of our computers in a country that has been kept safe by soliders for generation after generation, they are facing car bombs and IUDs and many other things that you better pray you never face.

I would say that they are praying for forgiveness because it is what they have to do, for safety because war is a dangerous place to be, and for peace in hoping that the war could ended without much more killing and agony.
I feel sad seeing the picture, as I could imagine what they must be feeling. Those soldiers, most of them dont want to go to war, dont want to kill another person, but they have to do it to protect their country.

These people at first maybe choose to be soldiers becase they think, by becoming soldiers, they can protect their own country. But, who would ever expect then they got sent to IRaq and fought a war. I fully understand your point of view that they can choose not to. It is a life that they choose and it is to be respected.
As for the picture, it would be hard to guess what they are praying for. I would say that may God always protect them and keep them alive, that is normal isnt it? but then, they might be praying for the war to end or for them to win the war, pray for them to get the stregh from God to do what they have to do (I cant say if it is right or wrong, afterall God look at their heart and human cant guess that). I cannot understand really about soldier feeling but I guess what they are taugh and built into their mind is if they do not kill, they will be killed.
If you ask for my reaction, I feel sympathy to them. they must look tough but they are risking their life out there, no matter how tough you look, the feeling of afraid losing your life would be threre, Moreover if they still have their family awaiting for their return at home. It is really sad whenever the times of war come that families are waiting for their member of family that goes to war with uncertainty.

They pray for their safety, they pray for their families, they pray for those they are defending. It is hard for them to take lives. It scars them more than you will ever know, because the sad truth of war is that the people actually doing the fighting usually are not who or what needs to be fought. Does that make sense? War is no longer about God being on our side, although when Al Qaida attacks, they claim it is on behalf of Allah. The current war is about assistant a people who were unable to defend themselves against the Tyranny of Saddam and trying to get internal issues under control. Unlike America, where if you don't like what we are doing you can stand on the street with signs condemning whatever it is, they are a country where if you disagree, you start a bomb to your chest or your children's chest and denonate it where you think it will have the most impact. That is why we are there, and we have to pray for God to spare us, because it is really something good we are trying to do. We are trying to keep several people from destroying each other. They do not have the luxury of saying, "well I will just vote for the other guy in 4 years."

I'm a soldier too and have men under me. We always huddle up and pray. We pray for these things
1) to survive
2) when it's our time to move up, may it be an uneventful one
3) all of us gets to go home alive and well
4) if this is a useless fight I pray the govt realize it and send us home
5) God to watch over us
