I wouldn't think it wouldn't matter if you believe in the existence of God or not. If you live a good life and not believe in God, when you die and find out there is a God, if he is a loving and forgiving, Wouldn't he just say "You lived a good life and was good to your fellow man. Even though you did'nt believe in me, I understand you're human and you have your doubts, but because of your goodness come on into heaven". If you find there isn't a God when you die it really doesn't matter.
