I recently bought a Brother sewing machine and I love it, it's very easy to use and maintain but still has lots of different stitches. I have heard nothing but positive comments about Brother, Janome machines are very good too I have heard. Mine is from Walmart for about $250 so you can definitely get a good one without spending a fortune.

I just recently purchased a Brother sewing machine. It was only $250, but they have ones a bit more expensive than that. It is a really good reliable machine. I sew custom made doll clothes on ebay and I use it everyday and it work great. Check out my link in my profile. I have also sewn for years on a Kenmore and they are also great machines.

I just upgraded to a Singer Futura CE 200. It has 70 stiches and also does embroidery. I love this machine and have had it for 6 months. It seems well built and has so many functions. I bought it from an ebay store new in box for 630 including all software and a warranty. Wouldnt go back for anything now!

Singer and Brother are well known brands here in the Philippines. I have the high speed machine for I have been sewing for many years now. I had 2 but I sold the other one.

I bought a Bernina 707 mini matic used for $300. Berninas are great machines and are work horses. I suggest that you check your local sewing machine shops and see what they have in the way of used machines. While the new machines are great, I have seen alot of complaints about the ones that are under $800. Talk to your local sewing machine repair man and see what he recommends. Then check Ebay for the machines he recommends. Your local sewing machine repair person will know what comes in for repairs most often and what is a sturdy machine. It's a great start.

well i reccommend staying away from the cheap little minature ones sold at walmart they do not work i bought two of them and could not get either of them to work once i think when it comes to sewing machines you get what you pay for if you buy one of the little cheap ones the work that you use it for will reflect that and the same principal goes for if you buy a more expensive one i think sewing machines are great inventions they really did make sewing so much easier
