With the prices of medicine going up everyday, have you considered or have tried using alternative herbal medicine for common sickness/ conditions like cough, fever or diarrhea? Or have you tried any herbal medicine for other sickness?

I haven't tried alternative medicines that I can think of (although when I started using echinacea for cough and cold, back in the day, people thought I was nuts LOL It wasn't popular then like it is now). My mom, however, was encouraged by a member of her oncology team to try an experimental broccoli-based herbal during her cancer treatment. I can't assess it, either way, because she reached a point where taking the capsules made her very sick to her stomach and her doctor said no more. But I like to think that I'm open to considering a variety of alternatives in my own health care.

An American friend of mine sends me organic supplements because he's really into this herbal stuff. I've also tried echinacea to boost the immune system but you should be wary when using this. I think its too potent to use for more than 2 weeks at a time.

I agree that you have to follow certain instructions or guidelines when using it. I, too, would not take it on a daily basis or anything because it's not a preventative. I start taking it at the first sign of a cold or sore throat, along with mega doses of vitamin c. I've been successful with it, as have my two daughters. My husband is disgusted by the taste, since we take it in liquid form, a specific number of drops in a small amount of water. He has a hard time getting it down LOL

In my household my mom knows an herbal medicine for cough. The plant is called "oregano". Whenever my nephews have a cough, she usually pick leaves from our oregano plant, crushed it till you can get some juice out of it. The juice from the crushed leaves will then be given to me nephew to drink. The taste is really bitter that's she always have a hard time letting my nephew drink it.

Yes we do this too. Also, you can try the leaves of the mango tree. Its prepared by boiling the leaves and drinking it like tea. It really helps.

There are a couple of things I use various hot teas for. Any hot tea will help with chest congestion because the warmth helps break up the mess. Chamomile tea with honey is great for a sore throat. A good strong peppermint tea will help clear your sinuses. Can't wait to see all the other responses -- this is a great thread!

My wife and I also drink tea in various flavors. I do agree that any kind of tea has a soothing effect on the body.
