Places to visit in Amsterdam?

I am going on a three-day city break to Amsterdam next month. We will be staying in a hotel that is apparently pretty central and handy for the train station and shops. Have any of you been to Amsterdam? Did you like it? What would you suggest I do while I'm there, and are there any shops or restaurants you can recommend?
