I have only been here a week, but I think responding to discussions already in place has been more helpful to me. I do not want to start discussions unless there is something clear and unusual I want to say or share. I have participated in discussions that the person who started a thread has just posted it then left it be and that has irritated me. I do not want to start something I myself find inane that I do not want to follow it. I would be looking for real answers or opinions.
So at this point responding works best.

So long as you write at least four lines and what you write is interesting and relevant to the discussion at hand you should do well. It is best not to just give one or two word answers to discussions and questions. Really short answers are just not interesting.

I am starting to post more discussions in hope of attracting more responses too.

I generally don't think about that. I won't start a new discussion unless I have something meaningful to discuss, hence a discussion can be born from it. The same goes for my responses, I will only respond to those discussion that are of quality, and actually promote a discussion that can flow. I won't try to scam on mylot, by posting numerous meaningless and pointless discussions. I approach this forum the way it was meant to be approached--to discuss quality topics, and keep those discussions flowing, and if I make a few cents that's a bonus, not a 'salary'. Mylot is not a 'job'.
I guess we could test it. Try writing 1 quality discussion and do not make any responses that day, then see how much it earns. Then the next day post 1 quality reply to 1 quality discussion, and do not create any discussions that day. See how much you make and compare the differences. I'm not concerned about the few cents you can earn from either. I just use this as an escape from my writing job and my volunteer work in my community.

That was my tactic at first, but now I am seeing that I am making money without doing anything from discussions that I started in the past!

I believe that starting new discussions will make you earn a bit more IF they proove to be successful enough, and that'd be discussions with at least 10 replies, otherwise the earnings are just about the same as you earn daily by replying to discussions started by other people.

Someone did a discussion on this and they posted their pay for various combinations of comments and discussions. They proved that good discussions bring in more money. I forget who did the discussion but it was a very interesting piece of research.

i think it depends on your discussion topic, if it attracts many visitor then starting a discussion gives you more money, and if you're posting a comment, then the payment i guess are have to be splitted among every comments on the topic, well im just guessing, because that's mylot policy to keep that 'complex algorithm' for them self.
