is promoting internet poker a bad thing??

a internet friend of mine killed him self because he got in big financial trouble by playing online poker.
started to make me think if its a good thing everyone can start playing poker behind his PC with real money.
i personally stopped playing for money online because of this and now only play it with friends for fun.
whats your opinion about this?
