I think we are going to see a rubberband effect. Everyone is upset with Bush and so they backlashed by voting for a Democratic congress. They are not going to be able to do much of anything in two years.
The only thing they can really do is to pull tight the pursestrings of the military. By doing that they are hurting the troops out in the field and doing nothing for the war itself.
America is a land of 'what have you done for me lately' and that is exactly what they are going to ask the Democrats when the next election comes around.
Add to that the fact there have been quite a few people that have already shown they are going to run for president as a democrat (Clinton, Edwards, Obama, Kucinch, and I believe four others). Only one is going on to the general election as a Democrat... we may see a Democrat run as an Independant (like Lieberman did in the Congress) because of so many strong contenders.
I do think, as do most, that it is going to be a Democrat in congress, but I don't think it's going to be the slam dunk we saw in 1984 (Reagan vs. Mondale). Obama has the momentum right now. He's young, moderate, and well liked by the American public. His roots are from all over the world and he has lived in many different places (Hawaii, Kenya, some other places). Foreign policy is going to play a HUGE roll in the next election and we have yet to see who has a plan that will get them into the White House.
Today: it's Obama.

I believe that it is too early to give an exact, precise answer to this question. Many factors can change in a couple of years.
Case in point 1992 and 1994. In 1992, the Democrats had a strong showing, electing more women than they had before. The Democrats had a majority that was not going anywhere. Inm 1994, out of nowhere (seemingly) the Republicans up and took control of the House for the first time in decades.
That all being said, If the election were based on the factors described in the question, the next President would definately be a Democrat at the least. There is a lot of talk of Clinton, however, I question her national electablity. She is a liberal northeasterner and they never have bode well in the middle of the country. While it is possible to win without losing a majority of states, a Democrat must at least take Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, Florida.
John Edwards might bode well, but once again, he has a drawback of being a young, inexperienced guy.

I support Hilary Clinton too since the republican president has been doing so badly.
