The FTP is widely known and used protocol to transfer files. I also use the same. It is well recognized and secure. It becomes even safer with SSL.
There is another method to transfer files which is comparatively new and being accepted world wide. It is also very popular in forums and communities which exchange media files and softwares. It is the 'torrent'. It is not very reliable though. It could carry viruses too.

i guess they both have their ups and downs.
some ftp servers does not support resume on transferring files
what if your computer hangs in the middle of the transfer. on the other hand most http servers support it and you can transfer in multiple segments.

http is for web and other kind of use and FTP is extesively used for file tranfer. HTTP is not a file tranfer protocol 90% of the people uses ftp or else they wil chjoose p2p protocols to transfer data and http is only for web acces that is text tranfer protocol.

most actively is http, while ftp protocols take much time depend on the byte size needed to transfer.
