What is it like in Southern / Southwestern Virginia?

My fiancee went down to Virginia after answering an ad online. A VFW needed some roofing work done and he figured the pay was great (he's laid off for the winter) so he'd head down. He ended up falling in love with the area. After he was finished with his job, he came home and we decided that since we don't have anything holding us in RI, that we'd try out VA. He's back in VA right now - doing more work at the VFW and applying around for full-time jobs. So, for you Virginians, tell me about your state! Especially if you're in Danville / Alton / South Boston area. I know Durham and Greensboro are a short distance away - I was told there were clubs and more social stuff just across the state line.
