Asking refunding from friend

I have a friend who always borrows money from anybody when he lacks it. The problem is that he does not refund as soon as he can, but he spends the money. I lent him a few times and it always lasts such a long time until the money are refunded. When he wants to borrow, he can promise you the earth. It's already embarrassing to me still asking the money, I've known him since the childhood. His parents got divorced and now he doesn't speak to his father because he told him that he goes visiting him only for money.
Any idea to do?

Sorry, my time is precious ;) The money are back. I met him two weeks ago, when he has some money, so I required the money, it took more than hour while he got them :)

First you should never loan money to friends or family, it will just cause problems. Of course, I don't follow that rule. But I do give without the expectation of being paid back.

Yes, I realized it in the last time. It's not a little sum and he knew that he has to pay back.
