How do you know when you're an alcoholic?

I've never considered myself an alcoholic, but if left unchecked, I'd probably be dead by now. I can go weeks without having a drink, but as soon as I'm around a bottle or a case of beer, I won't stop until I hit bottom. I used to buy a bottle of vodka once a week, but I had to stop when I began going through it in 2 days. Now I'm at once a month, but the bottle is still gone just as fast. I can't just drink for fun, I drink until I'm almost incoherent, and then I maintain that point for as long as possible. I don't think I need professional help or anything, but I don't want to have to avoid alcohol altogether. Any advice is welcome.

I think you should not drink it at all. That would be your best bet. Then you will get to the point where you wont even want it. Good Luck

Hey i know someone who is having a similar problem, but no matter what he has drinks on weakends and then he will not stop till he drops, I think the only solution is to totally avoid it, there is no other way to it

ugachaka, I'm not a professional so I would, in no way, attempt to give you a concrete answer about this matter. But, since you asked for advice, I'd encourage you to look up information on binge drinking. This sounds very much like what you're doing, based on your explanation. On many websites, binge drinking is defined as the consumption of five or more drinks over a short period of time, with the intention of getting drunk. There are definite risks involved in this type of behavior. I hope you'll get informed and take whatever steps are necessary for your health. I wish you luck!

it is not good to drink like that until u fall down i will cause u serious problems leaving that habit is a good one but the question is how to leave it i think if you have strong mind of drinking then you can make it you should mold yourself not to drink any more no can help unless you yourself realize that it is a bad habit

Trust me, you have a problem. Call AA ..ASAP...there are alot of people who have walked in your shoes. The road is not an easy one, but you can do it. The people there and here will support you. Some of the people close to you, will not support you. Take the first step.

I recently admitted myself on here that i drank alot and wanted to give it up. I had loads of help, i was ok when i didn't drink the minute i started again i could not stop. Do you go through problems at the time of when you start drinking or do you just fancy a drink? Maybe if you can look into the reason that triggers it again then you might be able to control it more. I've learned that i used to drink when i was bored or worried at work. So now when i start thinking about it i try and go for a walk or log on to here becasue it gives you something else to think about. Do you enjoy drinking??

i ahve never drunk so really dont know how it goes. but i always feel that you never get to know when occassional drinking becomes a habit. i just know many a people who had a troubled family life after they became drunkards, ofcourse in the beginning they were just occasional drinkers. i think one just needs to gets the point across his n gather some determination..

it perfectly normal you are not addicted, see they way u drink is a personal choice like not necessary that people who drink with water rather then soda are addicts. Till the time u can keep a check by leaving it for days together and still being fine you rock Cheers!!!
