seo: Black Hat vs White Hat

Was wondering whether one should really stick to white hat techniques when optimizing a temporary site. How long would it take google to find out that the site was using doorway pages etc. Basically, I would like to do just white hat but am under pressure from a client to do black hat to bump up the rankings. comments?
