It doesnt make any sense...but there are some wordings in english. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;neither apple nor pine in a pineapple. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which arent sweet, are meat. your house can burn up while it burns down and u fill in a form by filling it out..When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. When i wind up my watch,i start it. When i wind up this essay,i end it...find any such oddity?? do post in here!!

You really are quite an observer! Well, that is the richness of the English Language. You might even ask why "back up" is not the opposite of "back down"

There are a whole load of anomalies some of which have fascinating origins. It is as has been said, all part of the richness of the language and the diverse ways in which it has been developed encompassing all cultures. For instance the UK and the US have entirley the opposite views on what is a Private School and a Public School. There are historical rather than logical reasons for why Brits would regard a Public School as being 'private'. The English language and dialects contain direct input from European and Asian languages as well as the more obvious Americanisms. This is proof that the language is alive and well and growing at a rate of hundreds or even thousands of words every year. What about the difference between something flammable and inflammable - that's the best contradiction I can think of....
