since i was 3 years old i have always wantd one (or more :)) but my parents always said they were to expensive. is that a good reason? how much do horses cost? i am not looking for a racing horse, just one that would be good traveling around the mountains or property. not a show horse. i know hay would probably get pricey but how much is a horse? does the breed vary? what are good breeds to own?

We raise and breed quarter horses on our ranch..If you just want a good old horse you can get one fairly inexpensively. However this is where is start to agree with your parents. Unless you are out in the country you will need to boaard your horse. We charge from 250.00 for pasture and up to 600.00 for an indoor box stall.
Read the post above me and you will see all the extra costs incurred as well. A horse needs a farrier a few times a year to reset his shoes or have a trim. They need to be de wormed 4 times per year. We also require that shots such as west nile and whats called a 4way to any horse on our property. Horses also need their teeth checked to make sure they are grinding properly and not getting any sharp edges. Dentistry for a horse can run up a good sized bill
Sorry to burst your bubble, but maybe you'd better fall in love with a rancher just like I did.

A horse cost about $500 and up to purchase depending on size and age of the animal. The horse will need a stable, food, daily care, a veterinarian two or three times a year, special vitamins, oats, blankets, a saddle , reins, bridles, a after work out blanket, ropes to walk it with and lot of time. This is if you dont do anything special or show the horse or anything. The veterinarian can run about $600 to 1000 per year. Oh and dont forget your horse will need shoes also.
