Should we use the moon, or leave it be?

January 16, 2007 4:15pm CST
Recently, interest has been revived in the moon in the scientific community: there's talk of new experiments on the moon, drilling to discover whether there ever was life there, setting up a space-station up there, even hotels and colonies. Now all of this is theory at present, but what do you think of the idea? Could messing about on the moon have an effect on its orbit, change our tidal patterns (in a time when global warming is already affecting sea-levels and tsunamis)? Do you think this is the way forward, or could there be unforseen consequences? Should we go back there and experiment, or should we just let it be? Would it upset nature's balance and send that great lump of rock hurtling into space, or towards the sun, or the earth? All comments and thoughts welcome!

I think any exploration for knowledge is always good. We may not find its benefit soon but in future it could be very beneficial.

Well Hi...anglicemu I think you are concernd right about moon, but you know, we cant help it!!!! One day we have to abandon Earth, because life will be facing a hard jolt here, we wont be able to survive here any more...Then we will look around moon and perhaps Mars too! These two celestial bodies seems to be exciting dwelling for us! And than perhaps w have to abandon them too, looking forward any other planet in universe! Its just an another adaptation of life to survive!

Thanks for your thoughts vkbllm! I must say, I think we can help it - if we modified our behaviour and looked after the environment, then a. we wouldn't be overpopulated, and b. we wouldn't be polluting and sucking this planet dry, so we'd be fine with this one. I think we have a choice as to the direction we take as a species - the worst traits of human nature needn't be the ones we choose to follow, need they? Again, thank-you for expressing your opinions, and raising some interesting points!

the fact that the moon is closest to us makes it more possilbe to do some explorations which may serve as stepping stones to further explorations of the nearby planets and stars.a better understanding of neighboring heavenly bodies would provide helpful insights as to how the universe works

Like some ever spreading fungus, man will attempt to colonise everywhere he can reach. The motive will always be said to be for exploration, resources, for military expedience, but it is simply inevitable. Because, like Everest it is there. I don't see it as a problem. I believe the moon is large enough to maintain it's orbit integrity no matter what we try to do. I expect our own planet will decimate the population seriously within the next century, so this may affect the impetus for expansion of human colonisation.

Thank-you for your input. I agree - the human race does try to spread wherever it can, but unlike a fungus, it leaves a trail of destruction and won't regulate its spread according to the resources of its environment. In this respect, I'd say we're more of a virus, and now we're gaining the capacity to become contagious through our technology. Let's hope Earth's immune system manages to get our numbers under control before this happens!

You can bet that all planetary bodies will be used in the future...the moon and Mars as rock planets for colonies, Jupiter and the gas giants for modified energy. I can't see how they couldn't be used.

Thanks for your thoughts! It's interesting to hear what people's envision mankind doing in space in the future.

In the future we will use the moon for something, but i don't think for living there, because its the moon its "competly empty of resources" so maybe we should to another planet to live, but i don't think in the moon

I personality thik they should just leave it well alone they are causing enough with all their Experiments why can't just leave things the way they are They are always digging somewhere and causing Problems Sorry but that is my Opinion

I have always said we should try to live on the moon. I do think it is a way forward. I think we should go back there an experiment some more. I think they have given up on it way to early.

I think we should use it. especially if we really are going to be expanding our "use" of the system. it would make a perfect staging point.

there are lot of things that we don't about the moon. recent experiment suggests that there could helium in moon, which could be fuel for the future expeditions.if its possible to construct a station there it will easy for the voyage to mars and beyond.this may take more time to establish and there is not effect on the orbit of the moon becos very few members can work there.moon is just a platform for the further space exploration.

Well sure we will expand to the moon. We have to. We have screwed this planet up so badly that we need to find a new one. I'm sure that messing around on the moon will have negative effects. But what do we care. We don't seem to care about the negative effects we are causing on this planet....( I guess you can tell that I am a big environmentalist!)

Thanks for your input. I don't personally think we ought to give up on this planet yet! All the best.

I believe the purpose God created the universe with infinite number of planets, stars, and floating space-rocks is to provide the inhabitants of the universe the resources and possibly habitat for a very very long time. So, i think using the moon will be cool, humans should explore and expand. One day, the earth might not be able to support life anymore due to the high level amount of pollution. So, trying new habitat to ensure the survival of mankind would be a good endeavor. I think there is the mineral called "lunarium" in moon too. The mineral might be very useful in propulsion system.
19 Jan 07
Thank-you for your response. I've never heard of "lunarium" before - sounds interesting.

i think that every change has its pros and cons..but that shouldn't stop anybody from trying to change and taking a risk..as that is what will lead us to growth and development..so i am definitely for this experimentation...

We must not use the moon and we dont need use her because there is nothing important there, more over if we use the moon will be very dangerous because the army could use her like a base army, have a nice day on mylot and happy earnings also.

here's my point of view. I don't believe the United States ever really made it to the moon. No one has. If we (the USA) have been there before, why not again? and why not any other country? they all shuttle to outerspace, but not to the moon.. think about that one.

Interesting thoughts - thank-you! I do think you'll find that Russia made it to the moon, and recently China's been talking about going there too. Maybe if you're right, that's why the US wants to go - to put an American Flag up there before China gets there LOL! Thanks for your response.

I really think that exploiting the moon would cause a lot of danger for the earth. I don't know that much in this area but from what I know the moon is the main factor for the tides. Because it's so close to the earth, the difference of gravity between these planets have an influence on both, so it's better to leave them alone as they are.
18 Jan 07
Thanks for your comments. Good point, and I agree that we ought to leave the moon alone! Cheers.

they are all number one idiots. we all know that there is nothing in the moon only some sand and hard rocks. they why they spend their time and money for these useless work. they can spend that money for the starving children in this world. or they can use that money to work to make this world clean.

Thank-you for your response. I agree with you - we have bigger responsibilities to sort out the mess we're in, and the mess we've made of the earth. I too think that this ought to be our priority.
