For many years I planned to go to Japan. I was taking Japanese martial arts and I learned alot of Japanese language, and culture. I studied maps of cities and the country, had a train schedule, and was a sponsor for a couple of Japanese college students visiting over here for a time. I also wanted to get involved with TESOL. This is the teaching agency that sends english speaking people to Japan to teach english. If I didnt have a wife and kids I would have been gone in a heartbeat. Never ended up going because I could never afford it. Im told that its very expensive to live over there and the cost of a very small apartment would be about the same as renting a house here in Toronto. Watched alot of Japanese related movies such as Black Rain, and Rising Sun. Also watched Japanese News agency over here NHK. Sure do regret not getting there.

Although the living costs in Japan are quite expensive, housing isn't. Tokyo rents are more or less equivalent to Canterbury rents, which is quite a small town in the English countryside.
I have this information from one of my tutors who's lived in Japan for many years and even did her MA over there, writing it in Japanese.

I have always wanted to visit Japan. I love the culture. When I was in college we had to take a foreign language and all of my friends took Spanish, but not me I took Japanese and I am so glad I did. I learned so much more about the culture and the country. I am hoping to travel to Japan before I die it is my lifelong dream. I had no idea it was expensive to travel there. Well then I just need to win the lottery so I can go and have a good time. LOL

I have wanted to go to Japan now for several years, the place just fascinates me, I am a huge fan of anime and manga and my interest really stems from that really. When I was at school there was a japanese exchange student and she was really friendly, which from what I hear is a common thing in Japan. She also spoke very good english which led me to believe that communicating while out there would be relatively easy compared to some countries.
J-Pop is excellent, the japanese version of pop music is alot heavier than western pop music. Also movie wise, the Japanese are masters of hooro and have produced some very scary movies, The Ring and Dark Water being excellent examples.
However, I have learnt of something that is the only reason I wouldn't want to go there for. The Japanese Giant Hornet, this thing is 5 times bigger than the average honey bee and has a potent venom capable of killing humans. I have seen a documentary on these creatures and they attack the eyes first whichis pretty nasty, it said they are quite common in Japan.
I still would very much like to got to Japan one day though.
