Remember the good ole days at the drive-ins?

I know I just dated myself, but, what the heck. Remember those great times we had. Sneeking everyone in the trunk and a car load for $1.50. Seeing two movies and a cartoon. Goodies to eat were so reasonable. And privacy with our steady boy or girl.
I miss those days. I don't like these multi level movies and outrageous prices of $9.50 to get in.
Do you have some comments to share about this?

I remember paying 2.00 a carload, so we would load up the kids and lawn chairs, buy a takeout dinner and head for the theater. We'd back into the spot, set up the chairs in the bed of the truck, eat, drink and visit with the people around us until the show started. If the kids got restless, they could move around or talk quietly and not disturb anyone else.
Two movies, a cartoon and the first movie would replay for those who came in late.
And always someone would leave early and forget to leave the speaker, or turn on their headlights. All in good fun, others would blow their horns and laugh.

heck yes those were the days..I think they really need to bring those back for the prices to go and see a movie let alone buy anything to munch on you may as well count everything else out for the weekend for your money would be gone...use to be the kids could go to the movie for a couple of bucks then head to a little store to buy goodies on there way home and bring home change...haha ummm what year was that...
but yes those were the times we here in minnesota still have a couple of the big screens sitting where they once stood, I often wondered if I could turn it into a computer screen....LOL

Just asked about drive ins a few weeks ago! Many don't have them near them now, I hope your responders tell me otherwise. I love them, our we pay 6 bucks each though Adam our youngest is free for now, for two movies and the food is good and fairly cheap. I can get Iced Tea!! Don't think they charge by the car load now. Was great then!! We go as often as we can and have a good time. We don't get privacy with the kids with us lol, those people who can park in the back by the corn field.

Tis ok, you worded your differently and you have gotten a bit different and some good responses. 6 bucks is not so bad for us. 2 movies and inexpensive food makes for a good evening.

We still have a drive-in theatre in our area. We bring our own goodies, but even so, my hubby will ask if I want something from the snack bar. The cost has risen quite a bit. There was a time when you could pay by the carload, now it is for each individual and you don't get much of a break even on the kiddies. I do love that you get 2 movies for the price of one. But, we usually are too tired to stay for the second feature and head for home after the first is over.
I do miss the good ol' days when you could let your kids go down alone to the play area where they could swing, slide or play in the sand boxes. You could send them to the bathrooms or the snack bar alone too. Amazing how much our society has changed in just a few years.

Yes, the world is changing fast. And not always in the best ways. I too miss the drive ins. I grew up with them. Thanks again for your great response.

Depending on where you lived you could have been as young as 12 until you mentioned The $1.50. That has been a while. Your right though. I'm glad the small old theater in town has reopened. Its nothin like those mediaplexes. Thats where I take my family. Its also a little cheaper.

I'm only 19 so I don't remember the drive ins you're talking about, but there is a drive-in movie theater where I live that is basically just like that. For $7 per person you can see two movies, and there are concessions there as well. I've only been there once, but it was really cool. My husband and I went to see Pirates 2 and The Guardian. I was always jealous of you guys who got to go to the old drive ins, and now I can say I've finally been to one! :) The privacy is awesome, and I love being able to snuggle up under a blanket and get cozy while watching a movie! :)

Yes they were great. Our little kids were safe in the sandboxes and on the swings until the movies started. No babysitters, they came along. If we were teens with no kids, we had our privacy. And it was so cheap, even then, to see two movies and cartoons. Thanks for your input.

I remember going to the drive in with my parents as a kid. My brother and I would always fall asleep in the backseat after the first movie.
We still have a drive in in northern Michigan. I took my little sister there a couple of years ago because she'd never been. My mom really got into it... she'd start honking the horn and yelling out the window every time someone's headlights shined on the screen. I was sort of embarrassed, but she said that's what they always used to do... lol
I drunk lady got out of the car next to ours and went to the concession stand. When she came back she must've gotten confused. She opened the door on my car and sat right down on my mom's lap. It was hysterical!
Those are my drive in memories.

This is why I never go to the movie theathers these days. In our old neighborhood, there was a drive in movie me and my family went to all the time. Now in our new community, you don't see one at all.

i do remember! We now only have one drive in left. we used to have 3. its rare that we even go to the regular theatre. too expensive. and the movies come out so soon to rent-its just easier that way. But you cant beat the theatre popcorn!!!

You are lucky to have even one. I have not seen a drive in in the last 3 states that I have lived in. You are right about the popcorn though.

We had one in the town in which I grew up. My parents used to take me and I remember it appearing so big! I loved getting out of hte car and going in to get popcorn! It was so neat to walk by all those cars and see the various people. Sadly, it closed when I was about 10 years old. I haven't seen or been to one since! I've told my children about them and they are in awe at the idea. Interestingly, they say that they'd frequent one if it were available!

The drive-ins were great. On long weekends they used to do an allnighter. 4 movies in one night. We'd sneak in people, booze, food, all kinds of stuff. We were lucky enough to be able to take our kids before the last of them in our area closed. They just thought it was the most amazing thing going.

I have many fond memories of the drive in. Mom and dad would dress us in our pajamas, make a lot of popcorn and put air mattresses in the bed of the pick-up. Dad would park the truck backwards, and we'd all lay in the back to wathch the movie. Some of the movies I saw at the drive-in: Grease, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, Cheech & Chong Up in Smoke, Corvette Summer.

There is one drive in theatre locally, but I've only been a couple of times. It's only open during the summer months and the screen/picture quality is pretty lousy and they never changed the little speakers that you put into the car window, most of them are pretty staticy and don't sound very good.

That's a shame. It's a fortune to keep them running. Guess we will have to use the theater or a dvd then. Thanks for your input.

I didn't remember until now. I started going to the Drive-in when I was in the 5th grade with my brother. Our Mom worked there and we would get there early before anybody else. We always went next door to the store and bought candy to last through the movies. After about the first show, our Mom would bring a trash bag half full of popcorn out to snack on. I saw a new show about every week for 3 years.

The good old drive-in days are now gone and I think we just need to accept this is part of a cultural development, nowadays you have so much more options on how to spend your free time that I don't think drive-ins are that much missed at all in general.

I do remember those days and wish that we still had drive in theaters. They were cheaper and it was more enjoyable sitting our cars watching the movies and it was more comfortable than sitting in a movie theatre. You had more privacy if you had a special someone to watch the movie with. The movie theaters now are too costly in price of tickets and food and people are so rude and inconsiderate.

No my friend, all the drive in movies are almost gone. It's a thing of the past in most states. Very sad. And no, they never did check the trunks. Guess they really didn't care. It was so much fun in those days. We have a lot of cinemas, multi plex. Very costly $9.50 each. No fun in there at all.

oh man we still go to the drive in, now it cost use like 15 bucks for the 3 of us, but it is so well worth it because we take in pizza and all our snacks and drinks, and we get to see 2 movies, all at that price. I just love the drive in, i put my son in his PJ's and that way when we get home i can just put him to bed.

We still have a drive-in where I live. It only runs durring the late spring and all through summer, but it is still very popular. I think ours runs at about $2 per person which is definatly not bad considering the $8.50 per person cost at the only other movie theater in town. Maybe drive-ins should make a major come back.
