I would see whether the school has a good academic standard, whether the teachers are well qualified and considerate and is the school safe

My daughter is going to high school next year and has to register this week. She has two options... go to the Catholic high school which is half an hour away, or the nearby public high school. It has been a tough decision which has been made more difficult by the dollars and cents of it all. If my daughter wants to participate in sports teams, she would have to pay for a later school bus to bring her home. She is very involved in sports. We are raising our children as Catholics and not only will she continue to get the Catholic teaching at the Catholic high school, it also better academically compared to the two public high schools in our town. This is important. She will be taught better at the Catholic high school; she will learn more. The teachers are good there. It is a real struggle to make this decision but she wants to go where all her friends are going. I figure she can go there for one year and if we all find it difficult we will switch her to the public high school nearby.

Location should be the primary concern because you don't want the kid to get up at 5am to make it to school that starts at 8am. Academic standard and quality of teachers are important too!

The objective in school selection is to find the best possible match between the needs of the child and the education provided by the school. According to me one should consider the following factors to select a school for their child School Community Is there a sense of school community? Are there opportunities for students to participate in and contribute to that community? Do students feel a sense of loyalty and enthusiasm about their school? What is the social climate of the school? Is the student body homogeneous or diverse in terms of social, ethnic, religious or national status. Do parents pay an active role in school affairs? Administration and faculty What is the background of the head of the school? How long has the head served at this school? Has the head set a positive and consistent tone for the school community? Is the head accesible and responsive to the school community? Who are the teachers and what are their credentials? Do teachers challenge their students? Philosophy of education Is there any identifieble philosophy of education? What are the educational goals of the school? Do faculty and students feel that these goals are being met? Quality assurance and Performance How is the school accredited? How often is the school inspected and by what agencies, to ensure that proper academic standards are met? Does the school undergo periodic peer review? Are the standardised test scores or college admission records to gauge academic performane? What are the student retention and attrition rates? Other characteristics What is the enrollment of the school? When was the school founded? Is the school in convenient location? Does the school offer the curriculum/activities that are desired/needed by the students? Does the school offer boarding facilities? Does the school offer transportation? Does the school offer food service? tuition fees and other costs What is the school tuition fees? Is financial assistance available? Is there any extended or deffered payment available? Are tuition insurance plans available? The above are some of the factors than may be considered in selecting a good school for child.
