I wish this was an either or question, but for us at least, it's a both.
Our cat gets brushed every morning, and as often as she will let us through the day. And, since we have black furniture, including a black futon, we also have to follow her around with a lint brush. But, she's worth it!

LOL. I feel soooooo sorry for you. I can only imagine what it would be like to have black furniture. My cat does a number on my black work pants as it is. He is orange lol.

I brush and vacuum! LOL
My cats like to be brushed, but they will let me run the hose over them from the vacuum. I was goofing off on day, using the vacuum to dust with and the cat was laying there. So, being silly I stroked him with it. Well to my surprise he did nothing. No panic frenzy, nothing. That's when the idea of doing this occurred to me. So I tried it and he let me do it. I tried my other cat and same response.
Who knew? LOL

Sometimes I brush my cat, but he has so much fur I can't keep up with him. He sheds it before I have a chance to brush him.

I started out trying to brush mine once a day. Now I am down to once every chance I get. He is a domestic medium hair and he is orange, so it doesn't do a thing for my clothes when he lays on them lol.

I used to brush Waffles, my calico cat, a lot, and she just loved it. She purred and lifted her chin to let me brush there. I'm ashamed that I don't brush her as much now --- no time! Bur brushing is worth the effort, as the brush does pick up a lot of hair that would otherwise wind up in the cat's stomach or all over your furniture and clothes.

My cat Old Yellow LOVES to be brushed. He will purr so loud you can hear him across the room, and he DROOLS!! Loves it!! But our other cat did not like it at all. He would try and bite the brush. The tummy was especially sensitive. Brushing seems to help cut down on how often we have to sweep off the sofa. Also I try to give him a good scratching all over while he is outside, the fur just flies everywhere during shedding season.

I have three female young cats. They just love to be brushed. They line up waiting for their turn. Even with brushing I still have clean up on the furniture.

We *try* to brush our cats daily to keep their coats shiny. They don't shed much so if we miss a day or two, not big deal. When do brush them, we use a wire brush that catches all the fur so there is no clean up besides getting the hair out of the brush.

WE occasionally brush our cat, she absolutely loves it! We really should do it more often since we get a lot of fur out - but we just never seem to find the time to do it. Thankfully she is a short haired cat so it don't get overwhelming.
