I did some experiment on this.
Norton : Sucks (slow your pc as hell)
McAfee : Ok (slow ur pc a little bit)
AVG : Sucks (useless free AV)
Kaspersky internet security : BEST (currently using, does not slow ur pc)
NOD32 : Hard to use and not so effective
Avast : Dosen't like the GUI and does nothing
Windows firewall is useless. Either use ZoneAlarm or Kaspersky Internet Security.

AVG works very well for my computers .. you can find the free download at www.grisoft.com .. I love the protection it gives my computers from viruses and trojan horses.

i totally disagree that nod32 isnt effective..
i have tried so many anti-virus softs but then their GUIs which is mostly java-based really a resource HOG meaning it slows down a pc..
when ive tried nod32 2yrs ago wow..!! it just amazed me that it doesnt eat much memory with our system.. GUI is very simple.. AND VERY EFFECTIVE...! i dont get infected at all since ive been using it...=)

hi there,,,welll according to me there is an antivirus known as AVAST antivirus...i m using it from past 2 yrs now...there are two different options which you can choose from in this antivirus...its having a Home edition which can be used if you are using the computer in home and a professional package for the computers which work in offices...its a good antivirus and lot better than norton....its booting and scanning is pretty fast and the most inportant thing....itdoesnt make the computer slow as the norton antivirus does....so just check this antivirus and do let me know how is it....from my experience, i can telll you this is a good antivirus....the is AVAST antivirus...

China's rising(brand-name) is perhaps the best anti-virus software.

if you're looking for a free antivirus, I'd have to recommend AVG free antivirus but if you're willing to spend it would NOD32 antivirus, what's good about NOD32 is that it doesn't eat up memory and it's not a bloatware.

I have this and it never detects anything which I find hard to believe since I have manually found some well known things on my computer.

Its no other than AVG free edition, you can download it from the AVG websites. Updates are also availbale there, try it I think it's one of the best these days.

Avast! Home Edition.I won't use anything else on any of my computers and have converted friends and family as well. It's the easiest, safest I've ever used and like you I tried a bunch both paid and free. This one is free, automaticly updates daily and catches EVERYTHING.I haven't gotten one single virus since I've started using it and I can't say that about anything else.I've used it for 4 years now and couldn't be happier.

I have been using avast for the past one year or so and found it really better considering it is free for home users. Even though you have that you could also use mcafee stinger which is a small anti-virus tool which finds some specified viruses and trojans on your computer. And of course it is also free. You could also try spyware blaster on online security with spywares whenever you are online.

I just responded in another thread on a free antivirus that I am using, it's AntiVir, with a free personal edition. I have used it for quite a few years now, and no complain at all. Does not slow down my laptop, give very good protection and has regular updates on virus pattern. The best in my opinion ( out of all the free antivirus ).

of course kaspersky then.. you should believe in me.. i already using a lot kind of antiviruses but all of them cannot work as good as kaspersky.. kaspersky can detect all kind of viruses that cannot be detected by any kind of other antivirus.. i used to use my friend thumbdrive and almost 80 viruses found in the thumdrive. at that time she is using AVG free edition.. so you should know which is the best for you then :)

macfee is a decent one ...if u hvn't tried yet then go for it once...
zonealarm is also another option but ti take a like time during startup...otherwise its performance is commendable...

Norton antivirus is kinda bloated and resource hog, it automatically loads many (lots of them) process in startup of Windows which slowdown your PC. AVG has a low system requirements and offers rock-solid protection. Base on reviews on the web its the best freeware all around antivirus. i would rate Avast for paid antivirus as equal with AVG but i would recommend Nod32, it has the best protection and extra features which will not slow your PC. On Kaspersky, they say it has very good detection rate of viruses.

Avast is fantastic man...I have used it regurarly for 3+ years now!! It works great...Only problem is that if you are using Zone Alarm Firewall. Both are not compactable.. Here,I can see that you are using Windows firewall...That is good enough!! System mechanic really slows up the PC...U have 512MB ram...so,it wont b tht much a problem...I had only 256MB. Regarding, spybot, I would suggest you "adware alert" It is available as free and also paid versions. Both are good, and better than Spybot. What I do is that,Install system mechanic, do all the tweeking and optimising stuff, and then un install it. When I need it again,i reinstall it. I usually do this stuff once every 1 month or so.. But tht was because of my also PC... You may or may not want to try it. Nod32 is also a good anti virus..My friend is uning it,and it has so far given no trouble. You can also try Panda antivirus...If you really want to test!!It somes with Firewall also...I have tried it for a brief time...But it was good!!

I do not use an anti virus program I do an online scan periodically through bitdefender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html when it finds a virus it deletes it unlike others that tell u how to remove it.
Anti virus programs use alot of resources and are false protection I have alot of friends who use norton or panda and every bitdefender scan found some virus thier program missed.
I also use spybot and adware
