Well, to install linux you need to make an ext partion, which can be done during the installation. I am not very sure of what you have done so far. Did you try to install it on a fat32 or ntfs file system? That would not work. Also I am afraid you have lost all the data on that partition during the installation. But you can't say that the partition is lost, should be there, may be be it's just unallocated space. If you have partition magic(dos version), you ll be able to see the exact type of partitions you have right now. You can also use fdisk to see the partitions.
To install a basic linux, you need two primary partions. One is the ext(2or3) and the other is swap partition. If you need further help, I ll be glad to help you...good luck..

The problem has occurred because the Linux distribution that you were trying to install has formatted the partition in either Linux 82 and Linux 83 or even reiserfs, which are the Linux file formats. Now that you are back into Windows, you will be unable to see the partitions, but they are still there.
If you use the Linux CD that you used to install the operating system, then you should have the option of manually creating the partitions, so you can delete the partitions this way. Once the partitions are deleted then you can create a new DOS partition using a boot disk and format it so that it becomes available under Windows.
