Work Hard For Attention

In the past few days I have realized a few things about people. But the one thing I would like to discuss is the lengths people go to acquire attention from others. Now help me understand something, is it necessary to want to be accepted or part of the crew or center of attention? I mean, I have met individuals that go to the extreme to be noticed; to fit in. What's the point and why do they do this to themselves?
I remember when I was in high school, I never wanted to be the center of attention...I never even tried or even cared. To be honest, I didn't associate myself with much people. If I had 5 good friends at school, that was a lot. And the funny thing is...I was considered a very cool person. I didn't have to change my ways or who I was, I didn't have to force myself on people...I was just me. Why is it so hard for people to just be themselves' and stop trying so hard to fit in? I have helped many people overcome this issue in the past, but it seems to me that it is happening even more now. What do you think?
