Disabled parking

I want to talk about the uncaring people who insist in using disabled parking bays when they dont have a permit to do so. I have a permit but if there are no bays free it is ok for me to use regular bays. This however does not aply to all disabled people. The special bays are bigger for a reason. When I challenge people about using bays illegaly their response is 'we will only be a minute' All well and good but in that a minute a person who really needs that bay may have to struggle with a regular bay. We certainly dont have disabled permits because we want them BUT because we need them. I would be really happy to not have the word disabled applied to me as I am sure would every other disabled person.

I can't stand that. I also can't stand the people who use handicap bathroom stalls when there are other stalls available. Whenever I call them on it, they either say 'I wasn't long!' or 'I'm sure you can use another stall!'. People, handicap services are handicap for a reason. It doesn't matter if you'll just be a minute, or if you're running late. They aren't there for your convenience, they're there to aid those who really need them.

Having had handicapped family and friends understand your outrage.I have never intentionally parked in a handicapped spot even if ' I'll just be a minute.'That is NOT a valid reason people! If you are in that big of a hurry and won't be long, let someone drop you off ,circle the lot and pick you up.Or simply go else where if you can't find close enough parking to suit you.Sure, parking farther away is an inconvenience but not nearly as much as being in a wheel chair.

Hi and thanks for your comments. I'll just be a minute is a favorite line. And you are right a slightly further walk for an able bodied person is nevr going to be the hassle that some one with a wheelchair will have. Also where I am disabled bays are bigger to allow for the possible loading/unloading of a wheelchair. I am sure that people with disablities would love to not have the need of disabled bays, we sure dont use them for fun

I know a lot of those people as well, and I do say something about it, but when I say something those people come back at me and complain about how I should keep my mouth shut.

I have encountered people abusing me when I point out the problem. I put it down to their guilt and ignorance. Guess I have to feel sorry for them.

When some one replies i'll only be a minute, then you should park in front of their vehicle. Make sure you are not blocking anyone else. Then when they ask you to move, just say I'll only be a minute. Then just sit there as long as they were in the store and explain to them about how they inconvenenced you. You could also get their plates and turn them in. As for the bigger stalls in the bathroom. I am not handicapped (sorry if I used the wrong term anyone), but I use them sometimes. I'll tell you why. I am a bigger guy, 6'2" and about 375 LBS. Sometimes the normall sized ones aren't big enough for me. So I do sometimes slip into those. I myself have yet to have someone need it while I am in there, thankfully. I don't know what I would do if someone did.

I feel the same way being that Im pregnant and dont fit in the other stalls. Also, I have to use the bigger stalls for changing diapers, thats usually where they put the changing station.

I have seen this happen only a handfull of times. I also think that alot of times that there are not enough handicapp parking spaces. My oldest brother is in his 50's and he has a sticker on his car so when we go grocery shopping its hard for him to find a parking space close so we dont have to walk halfway across the parking lot

A lack of spaces is another problem, I agree. My local shopping centre has a whole row right outside one of the entrances, unfortunately it is driectly opposite the betting shop and is amazing the number of times you can see someone use a disabled bay to nip in and place a bet or pick up their winnings. So in this case the lack of bays isnt an issue BUT... I dont know the problem can be solved, some places it is a $80 fine to illegally park but that doesnt seem to frighten people. Say hi to your brother

I totally agree with you man as I have a friend who also has to make use of those kindsa parking. Its blatent disrespect and it makes me furious. Sure in my country one has to tedious look a long time for parking at the malls but I'll never take up one of those parkings..its just not right. So what term are you comfortable with? "lesser abled" I can understand how the common one could have negative connotations attached, but for the sake of describing a person what wuold you prefer??

Iam pregnant with a pre-existing hip problem which has only gotten worse since your hormones change when your pregnant, so my doc gave me a 6 month temp permit. I love it and helps a lot since I have a hard time walking around. After pregnancy and starting physical therapy I might have to have a permanent one. My husband doesnt think Im "handicapped" and thinks I take parking spaces from old people! Im not out for sympathy, my hip friggin hurts!! sometimes I colapse if I tweak it wrong! My doc wouldnt have given it to me if she didnt think I needed it! Also: I do use handicap restrooms because Im so pregnant that I cant fit in the normal size restrooms!!!! Some are so tiny that even when I wasnt pregnant I have a hard time getting in and out!

I see this quite a bit as people park in the disabled parking spots often without a permit and even ones that do have a permit are not really disabled. It is very easy here to get a permit, even if you have no physical or mental limitations. Anyone can park in a handicapped spot these days and do not like that at all. There has to be tougher laws or restrictions to make it better and easier for people who are disabled.

Here in a couple of counties of South Carolina there is a group that can go around the parking lots and take pictures of those parking in the handycaped parking and those people will get a ticketed. I know that some times I forget to hang my permit in the window too. There just are not enough handycaped parking in some place. or they are not near the door.

I see you are in Australia, so i don't know your local laws. Here in the U.K. we have disabled bays, which we can use, because my wife is disabled. However we can also park almost anywhere, for short periods. We can ignore double yellow lines so long as there are not loading restrictions or a dangerous position. We can ignore single yellow lines for three hours, or use an ordinary one hour bay for all day if we need to. So when disabled bays are not available we have little problem. OK others should not use them, and they do get busted for it. But I think we have it pretty good.

yes it is disgraceful how other people take advantage of the disabled parking bays, and you are right that somebody else could be in desperate need to use the parking bay for the disabled they have no right to be in their unless they are disabled this is my opinion, and you are right we do not like to be disabled and cannot help being this way the other people should be more considerate of others.

This is ignorance if you ask me. If the person that is taking handicapped bays can't understand that it is for those less fortunate than others is selfish. Maybe its cold and you don;t want to walk far how do they think that the disabled feels that has to park across the lot because you are in their spot. It isnt right and the law should really crunch down on this!

Ah, it is one of my pet hates. I use to work in a supermarket which had a disabled parking space right outside the shop and the amount of people who would park in it, pop and get a few things and then go. I would challenge a few of them and they all like you said say that they are only picking up a few things. I also thought the placement of the bay was insane. There is a steep bit of pathway upto the shop with no handrail or any form of assistance and to get to the shop for anyone who has walking problems would be close on impossible!!!

YA ITS TRUE THAT THIS JOB HAS TO BE DONE AS IF ONE HAVE THE PERMIT ONLY BUT WITH THE TODEZ INCREASED CROWD AND CONJESTION ITS REALLY HARD TO GET A FIXED PLACE AND MOREE OVER IF ONE GETS THE PERMIT ALSO THE FIXED LIABILITIES SHOULD BE THIS MUCH ONLY THAT ONE SHOULD PARK WHEREVER SPACE IS FOUND FREE..................

There is a fine for parking in a handicapped parking space without a permit. So people who do that should be prepared to suffer the consequences if they get caught. Those of us who are not disabled should be thankful that we can walk the extra steps and stop being so lazy and inconsiderate of those who need those parking spaces.

Part of the problem is that it isn't a priority to the police department, and the security that a lot of these parking lots have don't have the ability to ticket for it. People are in and out before the police can get there. Might sound stupid, with the lack of police as it is, but they should have certain people that CAN ticket for it. A special division of the police force or have certain secutiry companies that are able to issue tickets for it. Or at least tickets that can be inforced.

I agree with you, it is inconsiderate and I'm sure frustrating. I do see though some people who don't need those stalls and have the sign. It seems to be abused by many people. I also get frustrated as a parent when I see people parking in the parent parking. I have seen the people with diabled signs parking in the parent parking as well. Is that ok? I am torn on that one, they need to park close but the parking is designated for us mom's with kids and strollers and what not. What's your view on that one?

though i do agree that too many people do abuse the disabled parking places just to avoid walking 10 more metres, i also think there are too many of these parking spaces. everywhere i go i see at least 5 un filled disabled spaces, so you can see why sometimes people may take these places.
