What is with Cingular going back to the name AT&T? Do they have it in their contract that they are going to go back and forth with the name every few years?

AT&T used to be an independent company; Cingular was a wireless company jointly owned by SBS Communications and another of the former "Baby Bells" (I forget which one).
SBC recently bought AT&T, and since the AT&T name is so well known, they renamed the merged company AT&T. Now they are going to use that name for the former Cingular wireless as well.
It can be confusing; I only know if because I used to work on telecommunications publications (and because I own a bit of stock in SBC, I mean, AT&T). ;-)

Wow, thank you very much for that detailed answer! It does make more sense now, though it still drives me crazy!

I know. I used to be with Cingular and then it went to At&t, I got out of my contract. I am fed up with all these companies. I am with verizon now, and I don't like them either.

LOL, I feel you. Customer service is non-existent when you get these giant conglomerate companies with, if not monopolies, like half the business in the country. Perhaps when our plans run out next summer we will try one of the smaller, local companies.
